DUNGARVAN WINS

Decisive Victory In Egmont Cup

TAITORI AND RED SAND FIRST DAY AT HAWERA The hearty reception accordeo Dungarvan after his decisive win in the Egmont Cup yesterday was evidence of the popularity of the Colossus gelding’s victory, and the crowd was equally generous in recognising Taitorus success in the Flying Handicap in spite of the fact that the aged Sandstar gelding was the outsider of the field of five. Anoint-r feature of the first day of the Egmont Racing Club’s meeting was the successes scored by horses carrying number four saddlecloth, four of them winning in the first five races. The attendance was very large and the gate showed an increase over the corresponding day last year. The totalisator, operated on the win-and-place system, handled £19,732 10s, as against £15,378 10s on the corres* ponding day of the 1938 meeting, when the single-pool method was used. The increase was thus £4354.

Dungarvan, who won at the Tauherenikau New Year meeting, showed that he is back to his best form, for he came right away from a good field in the Egmont Cup to win by three lengths. He was always going well at the head of the fielu behind the pacemaker. Homily. The latter was out a dozen lengths in front at one stage but McTavish could not keep her on the course and she tired herself out. being eventually beaten into third place by Rustem, who came from the rear over the last half-mile. Ned Cuttie ran a good race to secure fourth place, and Brazen King, looking very well but perhaps in need of a race, weakened a trifle over the concluding stages to be at the head of the others. The sensation of the race was the complete failure of the red-hot favourite who finished last, and even the interference she suffered three furlongs from home could not excuse her display.

The open sprint, the Flying Handicap, was contested by a field of five, but the winner was the comparatively neglected Taitoru, whose win dividend was just short of double figures. However, the public gave the old chap a generous reception. Amigo, taken to the front rather soon three furlongs from home, appeared likely to miss second place till he made a final dab to head Race Call out of that position.

The other open race, the Whare-' roa Handicap, also drew a field of: five, but it was won all the way by j the both-ways favourite, Red Sane; with the two Wanganui candidates, Airing and Entail, disputing the minor, placings. Airam beat Red Sun in the Ohawe Hurdles and promises to do well over the battens. Lacy Boden scored narrowly from Tidal Gift in the Trial Handicap, and Valerian, trained at Matamata, beat Judgment and Filetto in the Juvenile Handicap. Namara scored at a generous price in the Tokaora Hack Handicap, in which Mischel, who finished third, a length behind Amoroso, might have been harder to beat had she been kept on the rails instead of trying to get between Amoroso and Namara (outside). The interference did not warrant an inquiry’ being held. Dark Eagle won the last race in a slashing finish, with Nereus and Earl Colossus in the minor places. An inquiry was held into interference suffered by Lady Furst going out of the straight in the Egmont Cup race, but the judicial committee decided that no further action was considered necessary. Airam Scores in Hurdles. Donegal was favourite for the Ohawe Hurdles, but was beaten into third place by the consistent Airam and Red Sun. Booklaw and Donegal were the early leaders and piloted the field past the stands. All Spirit getting into the fence opposite the judges stand. Donegal was in front of Booklaw, Don Erma, Airam, All Spirit,; Pango and Red Sun at the five fur-, longs, but Airam quickly ran to the front at the half-mile and was followed into the straight by Red Sun. The pair came away from the field and Airam held on to win nicely bj three-quarters of a length. Donegal ten lengths behind Red Sun, third, and then came Don Erma, Pango and Booklaw. Outsider Wins Sprint. Only five started for the Filing Handicap and Lady Ina and Amigo were best backed, but Taitoru, outsider of the field, scored a popular win. Race Call mov*-l out smartly but Life Guard led alone the back from Race Call, Amigo and Lady Ina. Taitoru was going nicely in the real, and followed Amigo, Life Guard and Race Call across the top and into the straight. Race Call and Amigo were in the firing fine at Hie distance, but Taitoru challenged and won nicely by a neck. Amigo made another dab in the last twenty yards and beat Race Call by a head for second place. Life Guard was fourth. Close Finish in Maiden Race. Tidal Gift was the straight-out favourite for the Trial Handicap but was narrowly beaten by Lady Boden at double figures. Tidal Gift, Fiancee, Le Marquis, Lady Boden. Crestman and Sang Bleu were the early leaders, and there was not much change in the order crossing the top. The fieid bunched on the turn, and at the distance there were several with winning chances but Lady Boden came through and caught the favourite in the final stages to win by a head. Le Marquis was a length back, third, just in front of Fiancee, with Crestman, Gitana Lass, Darthura and Sang Bleu in close attendance. Dungarvan Decisively. Lady Furst was a screaming hot favourite for the Egmont Cup but was never in the picture. Dungarvan

'winning decisively from Rustem and the pacemaker. Homily. Homily started well and led Dungarvan, Lady Furst. Brazen King and Winsome Lu past the stands. Running into the back stretch Homily put a break of four lengths on the neld, with Dungarvan two lengths ahead of Brazen King, Winsome Lu, Lady Furst, Ned Cuttie and Aussie Ra, Rustem being still at the feat. Homily went still further ahead, being out a dozen lengths in front at the half-mile, but Dungarvan closed the gap crossing the top, and he was alongside her on the home turn, four lengths ahead of Brazen King, Winsome Lu and Rustem. In the run to the judge Dungarvan asserted himself to win by three lengths from Rustem, who was a length in front of Homily. Aussie Ra was half a length away, with Brazen King fifth and Ned Cuttie. Winsome Lu and Wotan in a bunch.

Valerian Beats Judgment. Valeiian carried £2 10s more than Judgment on the straight-out machine, and the pair tilled the first tw’O places in that order. Valerian and Fiietto jumped out ahead of Judgment, The Tryst and Pantheist, but Judgment soon ran up to the pacemaker and the pair leu Fiietto and Pantheist across the top. The leaders were three lengths in front entering, the straight and Valerian, hanging out. finished a lengiii in front of Judgment. A length further back was Fiietto, followed by Pantheist, Gold Card, Kilometre and The Tryst. One for Namara. Ramleh, favourite for the Tokaora Hack Handicap, bled badly and was pulled up, Namara winning from Amoroso and Mischel. Amoroso and Namara showed out from Ramleh and Mischel, and after going a couple of furlongs Silver Gift and Professional ran up behind Amoroso and Namara. There was little change on the home turn, where Ramleh dropped right back and the field bunched. Namara came through to win by three-quarters of a length from Amoroso, with Mischel a length further back. Professional, Glentnawn, Silver Gift and Daisy Chain were next to finish. A Favourite at Last. Red Sand, winner of the Whareroa Handicap, was the first bothways favourite to win. Red Sand was first to show out from Triune, Barley Almond, Bntail and Airing, the last three being bunched. Red Sand came across the top two lengths in front of Triune and there was another gap of two lengths to Airing and Entail. Over the concluding stages the favourite was always doing it best and won well by two lengths.. Airing getting second place a neck in front of Ental. Triune was fourth.

Slashing Finish in Last Race

Dark Eagle was the straight-out favourite for the concluding event but Eastern Heir and Nereus were preferred on the place machine, and there was a great finish, with live horses almost in line. When they had settled down Eastern Heir, War Lap, Te Huia, Karerenui, Earl Colossus, Dark Eagle ano Wynardo were making play. Amatory made up some ground along the back and followed Eastern Heir and War Lap past the half-mile, but Wai Lap was then taken to the front ano lea Eastern Heir. Amatory, Eari Colossus, Dark Eagle and 'le Huia into the straight. There was a great finish, the leaders spreading across the course, and Dark Eagle got the i verdict by a nose from Nereus. witli ' Earl Colossus only a head away, and I War Lap and Amatory almost in I line. FOR JUVENILES ONLY TARANAKI EVENTS The decision of the Taranaki Jockey Club to confine the juvenile events on the programme for its autumn meeting next month to two-year-olds appears to have met witii general approval. Many owners of two-year-olds are not inclined to race them against horses a year older under handicap conditions.
