N.Z. FEDERATION OF YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUBS

WANGANUI DISTRICT EXECUTIVE (Own Correspondent). MARTON, Feb. 9. A well-attended meeting of the Wanganui District Executive was held in the Marton Jockey Club’s rooms on Monday last. Mr. A. L. Marshall presided, and there were also present Messrs. C. B. Anderson, F. Thorby and C. Vile (Bulls), V. F. Toulmin and P. Weston (Hunterville), R. Shield and L. McLeay (Marton), C. Goldstone (Westmere?, C. R. Leach (Wanganui A. and P. Association), A. R. Dingwall, hon. district secretary. Items on the agenda included several matters of importance relative to proposed Young Farmers’ Club activities, including the agricultural camp week which the district committee is desirous of holding in Wanganui during June next.

The first matter for discussion arose out of correspondence received concerning tours by two parties of Young Farmers’ Club members, one party from North Taranaki and the other from the Otago-Southland district, which are scheduled to take place during the months of March and May next. As a result of discussion, a decision was reached whereby the necessary steps be taken to have the Wanganui district specifically included, if possible, in the itineraries of these tours. In the past, touring parties had devoted only a very limited portion of their time to this district and, in view of the ample scope of attractions and interests offering, the committee considered that the Wanganui district should figure more prominent in future itineraries. Sections of a report submitted to a recent meeting of the Wellington Council of Young Farmers’ Clubs, by the council’s secretary, and containing suggestions relative to certain points considered worthy of inclusion in club activities, together with some suggested improvements in present practices and procedure, were also discussed. In the main, these suggestions were very favourably received and it is intended that further time be given, during which clubs are to be encouraged to give full consideration to the points raised in the report and to communicate their comments on same to the district committee, which will then make recommendations to the Wellington Council. The principal matters to which the suggestions in the report referred were the encouragement of the correct procedure at meetings; the correct keeping of papers, books, and permanent records of club activities; improvement in the design of the official badge and the encouragement of members to wear both badges and Young Farmers' Club blazers at meetings and functions, the inauguration of an initiation ceremony for new members and the adoption of an appropriate motto and song.

Correspondence was received pertaining to the proposal to stage an inter-district debating contest, to be conducted in conjunction with the Auckland provincial rally that is being held at Ruakura in July. The committee expressed the opinion that the time available in which to select the premier Wellington provincial team for representation at the contest, was rather limited and decided to leave the matter in the hands of the Wellington Council, which will, in all probability, discuss the possibilities of sending a team when next it meets.

Dealing with the matter of the appeal made by the Hon. Minister of Internal Affairs for support from the Young Farmers’ Movement during tiie staging of events in connection with the forthcoming Physical Fitness Campaign, the secretary intimated that copies of all correspondence received had been forwarded to all club secretaries. In view of the excellent merits of the campaign and the need for co-operation to ensure tiie success of the week, it was decided to send further advise to the clubs asking that each club offer its support and co-operation to the Physical Welfare Committee formed within its locality, and the oemmittee, further, appoints its chairman, Mr. A. B. Marshall as its representative to a public meeting which is being held in Marton on the Bth inst. with a view to organising the details of the campaign week in that district.

A report submitted by a special sub-committee that had been set up to conduct preliminary investigations as to the possibility of organising an agricultural camp week to be held in Wanganui during June, was also reviewed. This subject was one of the main items on the agenda and received due consideration. The report indicated that although the information as yet available could not be taken as conclusive, there appeared to be a reasonable possibility ot staging a successful rally in Wanganui during the month of June. Providing suitable accommodation could be arranged there should be little difficulty in making the other necessary arrangements. Enquiries are at present afoot, concerning accommodation and catering, whilst the support and co-operation of other local organisations in regards to transport, social activities, etc., was also being sought. Already assurances of willing support had been received from the Wanganui A. and P. Association. Recommendations concerning the date of the fixture, limitation ot numbers attending, catering, transport, and camp routine and equipment, together with suggested programme of events, were also included. Considerable discussion took place and further suggestions were brought forward. The report prepared by the sub-committee was adopted and further investigations are to be carried out by the sub-committec. At the conclusion of the meeting the chairman expressed his pleasure at the attendance of the meeting and particularly thanked those members who had travelled long distances in order to be present. The meeting then concluded with a vote of thanks to the chair. ----- jgNVELOPES for every need. Mer- j cantile Wove, at 2/9 (inc. tax) box of 250 is excellent value.
