MARTON BOWLING CLUB
THE SEASON’S PROGRESS (Own Corespondent). MARTON, Feb. 9. The Marton Bowling Club has made wonderful progress during the past two seasons and its membership has trebled during that period. Of course, there were a number of new players who had never trundled a bowl before joining, but they very soon adapted themselves to the intricacies of “kissing kitty” and are now deriving a good deal of pleasure on the green. The club has been very fortunate in having a “live” secretary in Mr. Sid Goebel, for the notice board is full of engagements up to the end of March, which gives all players an opportunity of improving their game. The club competitions have created a good deal of interest, more especially the evening games. The holders of the Gatrell Bulldogs are Lewis and Blomtield; Gorrie Star, Hawken, and Atkinson Rooster, Bland. The singles championship was played in lour sections and the winners of the sections are: A, Ashton, with live wins; B, McKenzie and Blomlield, equal with 4 wins and 1 loss; C. 'Goebel, with 5 wins; D, Rayner and Sanders, equal with 4 wins and 1 loss. During the coming week-end, eight rinks will pay a visit to Rapanui for a friendly game, and cars will leave the Marton green at 8.30. The following have signified their intention of making the trip: Boswell, Ward, Humphries, Miles, Brennecke, Mogridge, Sanders,, Hamer, Bland, Mclndoe, Lewis, F. Green, Ashton, Prince, Thomson, Nuttall, White, Rubery, Upchurch, O. Green, Gronn, Sutcliffe, Bending, Blomtield, Denbow, Freeth, Whitfield, Gibbs, T. Baines, Kelly. Six rinks from Marton intend to pay a visit to Levin for an all-day tournament on February 25. Hokowhitu are sending eight rinks to Marton on February 19 for an allday tournament on the local green, starting at 10 a.m. Four local bowlers are deserting the local green this (Friday) evening for a week-end’s fishing at Tauranga, Taupo, the party consisting of Messrs. A. Williams, M. Atkinson, S. Goebel, and A. Way. Hoping they have an enjoyable time and don’t forget your home friends if you get too many fish.
