TAIHAPE FLOWER SHOW
MANY FINE EXHIBITS (Own Correspondent) TAIHAPE. Feb. 9. Many tine blooms were displayed at the tenth annual flower show of the Taihape branch of the Plunket Society. which was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday and attracted a large number of visitors. The general lay-out of the exhibits was pleasing in the extreme and reflected much credit on those responsible for the organisation. The flower show committee consitsed of Rev. E. T. King (chairman), Messrs. E. A. Abbott, F. Dewhirst, Mesdames A. R. Fannin. A. G. Gienny, G. N. Mac Diarmid, L. H. Haydon, J. Q. McWilliam, and the secretary (Miss N. H. Fannin). Entries in the gladioli section were not up to expectations, but on the other hand a large meagre of support was accorded the section for children over twelve years and under 17, and it was gratifying to see the interest in flowers on the part of the younger generation. Entries in the decorative section for adults were exceptionally large and a high standard was set in these classes. The points prize in the decorative section went to Mrs. A. Wilson, of Winiata, in the face af keen competition. Mrs. A. Arms, of C-hGtu, gained most points in the gladioli section and was awarded a championship in this section. Mr. S. Bolt gained a similar distinction in the dahlia section and also carried off the points prize. Mrs. A. R. Fannin scooped the pool in the sweet peas classes, gaining no less than 24 points. Mr. R. Gordon, of Taoroa, scored most points in section D (miscellaneous), while Mrs. Arms won the points prize for section E (miscellaneous). Section F (semi-novice), saw Mrs. W. R. Duncan, of Taoroa, at the top of the list of prize-winners, while Mrs. Bolt was awarded the points prize in the novice section. Claude Becker gained most points in the sections for children over 12 years and under 17, while Ngaire Marsh did likewise in the children’s section, 12 years and under. Judge’s Comments Commenting on the display of flowers, the judge, Mr. J. Mason, of Feilding, said that the show compared favourably with others at the bigger centres, though he would have liked to have seen more entries in the gladioli section. Mr. Mason pointed out that an endeavour was being made to follow the lines laid down by the National Dahlia Society in regard to the classification of flowers, and exhibits that were not entered in their proper classes would not be considered. Proceeding, Mr. Mason said that the champion dahlia exhibited by Mr. S. Bolt, was a particularly fine specimen of “Iris Ransom.” He was also impressed with the champion gladioli shown by Mrs. Arms, and also the champion exhibited by Claude Becker in the children’s section, though he had to admit that some of the exhibits in this section were not up to standard. The colour of the cut flowers was exceptionally good, due to the absence of sunshine. Blooms were late everywhere this year, this fact being particularly noticeable at the National Flower Show at New Plymouth. Blooms should not be seen with open centres at this time of the year, declared Mr. Mason, who went on to comment most favourably on the lay-out of the exhibits at the Taihape Show.
