ALLEGED CATTLE-STEALING
ONEPUHI MAORI NOT GUILTY MARTON, Feb. 8. Not guilty was the verdict of the jury at the retrial in the Palmerston North Supreme Court on Tuesday of Rangi Tapine, a Maori, on a charge of stealing, at Onepuhi on September 1 last, a steer, valued at £8 10s, the property of Allan Fladfieid Marshall. Accused was before the Court last week, when the jury was unable to agree on a verdict. Sir Hubert Ostler was on the Bench, while Mr. H. R. Cooper conducted the case for the Crown and Mr. G. I. McGregor appeared for accused. The evidence for the Crown followed that adduced last week, while accused this time called no evidence. The jury was absent 40 minutes in coming to its decision. On the verdict being announced, accused was discharged.
