Twenty-three Convictions.

“Apparently he would rather stay in gaol than support his wife, from whom he is separated,” commented Detec-tive-Sergeant H. Nuttall in the Napier Magistrate’s Court when Albert Leonard Hansen, a married man, appeared on a charge of stealing a bicycle at Gisborne. “I do not know whether that is true or not,” he added, “but I would point out that since 1925 he has had 23 convictions.” The detectivesergeant pointed out that the accused had taken the cycle at Gisborne about Christmas time and had ridden through to Nuhaka, where the machine had been sold. In view of the list of previous convictions, Mr. J. Miller, S.M., said he would convict the accused—who pleaded guilty—and sentence him to six months’ imprisonment.
