USES FOR WOOD
CONSUMPTION LN GERMANY NEED FOR COLONIES FOR SUPPLIES BERLIN, Feb. 7. An official investigation into the increased German consumption of wood suggests that the output ot synthetic fabrics cannot be substantially increased beyond the present productios. It is pointed out that the 1938 consumption was 55,000,000 cubic metres, of which 45,000,000 were from German forests. Imports decreased in comparison with the pre-war years because of foreign exchange and other countries’ unwillingness to supply through exploiting their own timber. It is also emphasised that Germany is now achieving the maximum production from her forests, hence the need for colonies, as wood is required increasingly for building, staple fibres, wood-gas, cattle fodder and alcohol.
