History of Rome to Link Fascism and Early Empire
ROME- A new monumental History of Koine, written by Italian savant?, will be published shortly in this country. The work will consist of 3U volumes, and the first four books will appear within the next few months as an appropriate contribution to the celebrations to be held this year iu Italy in connection with the bimillenary anniversary of the birth of the Emperor Augustus. I.‘fanned by the Institute of Roman Studies, an organization which actively promotes the study aud knowledge ot Roman culture, the new history aims at giving a novel interpretation to the manifold events connected with the famous city. The main idea which will run throughout the new work will be that from the very first day of its foundation to modern times, Rome has continu- )::- v exercise I a political and civiliz ing mission, whose latest mauifestatio*. is the political unification of Italy and the rebirth of an Italian Empire. The history of Rome thus becomes it. i larger sense the history of Italy. Jt •.any thus be seen that the new histon jf Rome will develop, and will attempt •_.» substantiate, one of the most funda a final doctrines of Fascism, name'y that Fascist Italy is the heir and direct successor of Imperial Rome. The volumes will not be published iu •aronological order. The first four jooks that are to appear this year deal respectively with the Punic Wars, Roman art from the eighth to the fourteenth century, Roman military art, aud K man literature in the Imperial Era | and the early Christian writers. These and the remaining 26 volumes will all be written by Italian historians of dis- 1 ti net ion, who are also firm supporters of Fascism. Only 10 volumes will be devoted to a description of Roman history propci. JSeven other volumes will recount the events from the fall of the Homan Empire to the creation of the Fascist or new Reman Empire. The remaining 13 volumes will deal with particular aspects of Roman life and culture, such as :he arts, literature, law, language, typography and religion.
