CITY COUNCIL MEETING REPORTSAND CORRESPONDENCE The first monthly meeting of the Wanganui City Council was held last night, Mr. W. J. Rogers, Mayor of Wanganui, presiding. Those present were Crs. J. J. Scott, D. W. Earle, J. W. Broad, H. Lawrence, S. J. Harris, A. W. Scoullar, C. N. Armstrong, O. Hales, G. H. Hawkins and R. E. Cuthbertson. Leave of absence was granted to Crs. J. Siddells and G. Bennett, both of whom were reported to be enjoying improved health. The Works Committee reported that the Wanganui Garrison Band had agreed to fit and remove lamps before and after using the Queen’s Park rotunda in the event of the council deciding to provide lighting. It was recommended that the city engineer be authorised to make the electric light connections.
A suggestion from the Minister of Finance that the council should approach the Education Department regarding finance for the Buffalo scheme at the public library was referred to the Library Committee for consideration. * * * * The chairman of the Works Committee (C. O. Hales) and the city engineer, Mr. L. F. Row, were authorised to represent the council at the annual conference of the New Zealand Institute of Civil Engineers at Auckland from February 20 to 24. Permission was given to the Central Swimming Club to take up a collection during the progress of the annual bridge-to-bridge swimming race. The Wanganui Primary Schools’ Swimming Association was given the use of the Gonville baths for the swimming of heats in the championships on the afternoon of Thursday, February 16. X * * * Subject to the date not clashing with the Gonville Swimming Club’s fixtures, the Fordell Swimming Club was granted the use of the Gonville baths on the evening of Saturday, March 4.
The Works Committee reported that the engineer had been asked to report on the practicability of providing a cycle track in Somme Parade. Advice was received from the Wanganui Fire Board that it had agreed to charge the cost of oil and petrol only for the use of a fire engine for pumping at the Carlton Avenue sewer recently. The Wanganui Salvation Army was given permission to hold a street collection on Wednesday, October 18, on the motion of the Mayor. * * * * The extension of the four-inch water main in Taranaki Street by 11 chains was authorised on the recommendation of the Works Committee. Advice was received from the Department of Labour that the No. 13 subsidy scheme was being extended and that all works in hand would be subject to review.
