TO STOP SHRINKING

TREATMENT OF WOOL. NEW METHOD FOUND. Received p eb. 7, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, Feb. 6. A new method of producing nonshrinkable wool by using enzymes—complicated substances in living cells —has been disclosed in a report of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. One type suitable for the process is papain, obtained from the milky juice of the pawpaw, the activity of which can be controlled chemically. Apparently the substances act specifically on certain regions of wool fibre, but it is too early I to regard the treatment as reliable.
