VALUABLE ADDITIONS

MUSEUM COLLECTION NORTH AMERICAN MAMMALS A fine collection of fur-bearing mammals at the Alexander Museum, Wanganui, has been further enhanced by a group of 14 North American specimens, received in exchange from the Agassiz Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts. With two exceptions, the animals are entirely new to the museum, and form valuable links in the collection. Only the skins of the specimens were received, the mounting being very efficiently done at the museum. The group comprises a lynx, red fox, grey fox, raccoon, marmot, three species of squirrel, spermophile, chipmunk, wood rat, kangaroo rat, Hudson Bay skunk, and California skunk. Owing to the havoc wrought by hunters the animals are rare. Many are bred on farms, but the museum specimens were caught in the wilds.
