TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD
SUCCESSFUL GARDEN PARTY On Saturday afternoon a well attended garden party, under the auspices of the Wanganui Townswomen’s Guild, was held in the spacious grounds of Harvey House, Collegiate School, the residence of Mrs. J. G. Denniston, chairwoman of the guild. A pleasant afternoon was enjoyed by a large number of members and friends, strolling round the grounds admiring the trees, shrubs and flower beds, or taking part in the games and competitions arranged for their entertainment. Tents and a “bring-and-buy” stall were set out on a tree shaded lawn below the terrace. The well-laden produce stall was in charge of Mrs. G. Spooner and flowers were sold by Mrs. Mayo. Assisting Mrs. Wagstaff with the competitions and entertainments were Miss Gwen Bates, Mrs. Evans (who donated a beautifully iced cake), other members of the committee and Mrs. Broadhead. Refreshing cups of tea were served on the verandah and on the lawn and ice creams were also in demand. Assisting Mrs. Denniston were members of the committee, including Miss A. H. Cole, Mesdames Bertha Bates, Bat, Spooner, Moore, Evans, Archibald, Amies. Butcher, Mackay, Maramaru and Miss Moffett. Thanks were expressed to Mrs. Denniston for her generosity in lending the grounds of her home.
The results of the competitions were as follow:—Peanut hunt, Mrs. Litchfield and Mrs. Dixon (equal); putting, Mrs. Lange; ball in bucket. Miss Parnell; treasure hunt, Mrs. C. L. Andrews; Ashing, Master D. Denniston. The competitions for the cake and box of chocolates will be completed at the monthly meeting this week.
