MARCONI’S SUCCESSOR
YOUNG GERMAN WOMAN BRILLIANT SCIENTIST In the realm of science one of the most interesting stories of recent times is that of the young German woman scientist, Berta Kump, who is regarded as Marconi's successor. Born of a poor family and left an orphan at an early age, Berta Kump, at the age of 15 years, took a domestic job in the home of a medical man in Freiburg. Working in the house all day, she spent her nights studying, and practically all her wages went in paying for tutoring to prepare her to enter the University of Freiburg. Eventually she got to Berlin, where she obtained the degree of doctor of engineering as the result of a brilliant thesis. Her passionate devotion to science, her unusual gifts as a research worker, and her special interest in teledynamics attracted the attention of Marconi, and finally she became his collaborator. Now. at the age of 28 years, she is regarded as his successor in that particular field of science.
