UNION’S SUCCESS

WELLINGTON REGATTA VICTORY IN EIGHTS AND FOURS CHAMPION SCULLERS BEATEN [ Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 4. Water conditions were ideal at Petone on Saturday when the Wellington rowing regatta was held. With entries from Auckland, Tauranga, Wanganui, Blenheim and Napier, the regatta was really a full-dress rehearsal for the Dominion championships at Picton next Saturday and all the events were keenly contested. The two principal races, the open eights and the senior fours, were won by Wanganui Union, whose four firsts and four seconds in 11 starts lor £45 in' prize-money was an excellent performance. Petone's four first and three seconds netted them only £2l, but they had the distinction of winning the coveted “double,” the Bridson Cup for the junior singles and the Pearce Cup for the senior singles. Equally gratifying to the club was the performance of P. Abbott in beating R. Smith (Auckland), holder of the New Zealand senior singles title, and of Abbott and K. Boswell in beating Smith and R. Morey (Auckland) in the senior double sculls. The return meeting at Picton, when Smith will be defending his titles, will be awaited with interest.
