SWIMMING

WANGANUI EAST CARNIVAL SUCCESSFUL AFFAIR The seating accommodation at the Wanganui East School baths was taxed to the utmost on Thursdaynight, when the Wanganui East Swimming Club held their first carnival of the season. The weather conditions were ideal and with a large number of swimmers engaged throughout the lengthy programme there was some good fare for swimming enthusiasts. Visitors were present from Levin, Palmerston North, Waverley and other centres in addition to all the local clubs. Prior to the commencement of the programme Mr. J. B. Cotterill, M.P., president of the Wanganui Swimming Centre, announced that the penalty clause regarding ’ incorrect times would be enforced. The result was that a large number of swimmers approached the officials to effect alterations in their handicaps for events in which they were engaged. Even then there were several disqualifications through the margins allowed under the rule being exceeded. During the evening a presentation was made to Mrs. T. Anderson in recognition of her services as Press steward, keen appreciation of her assistance being expressed by officials. The polo championship match between Wanganui East and Gonville was keenly contested. The half-time score was one goal all, but after the interval Wanganui East scored two goals to Gonville’s one, Wanganui East thus winning by three goals to two. Results were as follow: 100yds.
