The daily payments had fluctuated from £5OO to £12,000, one of the biggest daily payments. The city rates for the year were £lll,OOO, in addition to which there was a Earbour Board rate of £13,800. Mr. Murch said that ratepayers would assist the staff by making their payments as early as possible. Safety Matches. Stocks of safety matches in the majority of Wanganui retail stores appear to he of normal proportions and there is no sign of an imminent shortage, according to inquiries made by the “Chronicle” during the week. One retailer stated that he had received inquiries from customers for as many as two gross of safety matches, apparently under the impression that a rise in price was expected. "New Zealand-made safety matches can hold their own with the imported article,” he said. "There Is no material difference in the quality, and they are only fractionally dearer. Our experience has been that normal demands can be met -without undue (difficulty.”
