OPUNAKE CUP

Autumn Coast Circuit Opens • GOOD FIELDS ENGAGED REVIEW OF PROSPECTS The autumn racing circuit on the west coast of the North Island opens to-day with the Opunake Racing Club’s meeting, and will be continued next week at Hawera, where the Egmont Racing Club’s two-day fixture will be held. This will be followed by Woodville, Wanganui, Rangitikei and Taranaki in successive weeks, and the form of horses on the circuit will be interesting to follow. The card of eight events offered at Opunake is an interesting one, for useful fields are engaged, though in some events the number of starters will not be very large. Betting will be on the single-pool system. The track at the Pihama course is reported to be in good order after the recent rains. The Potiki Hurdles field numbers eight, and probably the topweight, Red Sun. will be favourite, though he has to concede from IBlb to 301 b. to his opponents. Ohanga is improving and Don Erma and Booklaw may be found playing a prominent part. Hawera reports are that Le Marquis is one of the most promising of the eight contestants in the Borough Stakes, but Sang Bleu and Young Charles may be found disputing the issue with the Lord Quex gelding. On his day Amoroso is smart over five furlongs, and he should be able to account for the opposition in the Electric Hack Handicap. Gold Petal has shown pace and Kokako would be fancied if it were not for a penchant for running off. St. Cedric and Fiancee are another pair with good chances. Taitoru heads the field of nine for the Opunake Cup. but he is getting on in years and some of those below him should finish in front. Aussie Ra finished third in the Wellington Cup and his win in the Christmas Handicap at New Plymouth suggests that his form will appeal to the public. Winsome Lu is another useful sort, and Lady Kyra may be in the money. Red Sand and T*e Huia are useful, and on the minimum Chat should have a chance. One comes back to Aussie Ra. The topweight. Te Huia. appeals in the Alan Good Memorial Hack, and he may take on this race in preference to the cup. Ramleh has also good credentials and Gold Petal will have friends. Judgment stands out in the Juvenile Handicap and should account for Kokako. The Flying Handicap has only a small field of five, including Taitoru. The best prospect appears to be Life . Guard, who was a winner at New Plymouth and is very smart. Dual engagements are held by several of the President's Hack Handicap field, but Viracious. War Lap. Professional, Naughty Marietta and: Race Camp would appeal in the ab-j sence of the topweight. Chat. The following may be fancied in their respective engagements: - Potiki Hurdles.—Red Sun. Ohanga Borough Stakes.—Le Marquis, Sang Bleu. Electric Hack Handicap. Amoroso, Kokako. Opunake Cup.— Aussie Ra. Red Sand. Alan Good Memorial Hack.—Te Huia. Ramleh. Juvenile Hack Handicap.—Judg-! ment. Fiancee. Flying Handicap. Life Guard,' Clessamor. POTIKI HURDLES HANDICAP. iOf £loo ; 1} miles).
