TAIHAPE MAGISTRATE’S COURT

FARMER CHARGED (Own Correspondent). TAIHAPE, Feb. 3. At the Taihape Magistrate's Court yesterday, C. W. Newport, stock inspector, took proceedings against E. J. Cameron, dairy farmer at Utiku, for selling milk without a licence. Defendant pleaded guilty. Mr. W. H. Maclean, who appeared for Cameron, said that his client had been licensed previously as a milk vendor, but found that it suited him better to send his cream to the factory, and when his licence expired he followed this course. He was badgered by people who were unable to procure milk, and in order to oblige, he had supplied them. His premises were considered suitable when he had a licence previously. Mr. C. W. Newport stated that he saw Cameron's son delivering milk. Witness had received a complaint that Cameron was selling milk that was not clean, and he (witness) tested a sample and it proved satisfactory. Mr. Newport added that Cameron's premises were regarded as unsatisfactory when he held a licence for selling milk and he was warned to effect improvements before his licence could be renewed. Cameron was fined £3 and costs 17s, and witness’ expenses 15s. The magistrate remarked that defendant had been dealt with leniently but if he sold milk again without a licence a heavy penalty would bn imposed.
