OHAKUNE
BOWLING (From the “Chronicle’s” Special Correspondent). Members of the Ohukune Bowling Club who visited Taihape on Thursday and played Taihape for the Rangitikei Shield speak in glowing terms of the treatment received at the hands of members of the Taihape Club. The local bowlers attributed their loss to the keenness of the Taihape green, which was in excellent condition, and suprise was expressed that the margin of four points on the aggregate was not I greater. Following are the results of the weekend games played on the local green: — Junior Rinks.—Clemett; Barker, Young 23 v. Watson, Veitch. H. Pearce ■9. Senior Rinks.—Lightband, Campbell, Richardson, McWilliam 28 v. Binnings, Butter, Curran, Eaton, 13; Walsh, H. Adams, Cronin, Havler 20 v. Mahony, Manzies, Curtis, Tozer 17. TENNIS. On Saturday afternoon Ohakune and Junction met in one of the series of tournament games that will be played during the season between Raetihi, Ohakune and Junction clubs, and Ohakune proved victorious by 11 sets to 5. Following are the results of the games: Men’s Singles.—L. North v. T. Har- : ris, 9 —2; K. Lyttle v. H. A. Penn, I —9; T. Dinwoodie v. H. P. Andrews, 3 —9. Men’s Doubles.—North and Lyttle v. Mrs Woodlock and rs Bush, 6 —o. DENTAL CLINIC Mr R. D. Elliott, inspecting dental officer, visited Ohakune on Thursday, and in company with Mr T. At Blyth, headmaster of Ohakune School, inspected the apartment set aside for a dental clinic in the new Plunket Society building. Mr Elliott expressed ap ' proval of the room, and stated that it : now remained for the local committee ito provide the necessary furnishings. | He also stated that an inspection I would be made later and if favourable I a nurse should arrive at Ohakune about I March or April. SOCIAL i At the residence of Mrs C. Johnston. | Raetihi Road, on Wednesday evening, a I large number of friends gathered in ■ honour of Miss V. Clemett, who in comi pany with her brother, leaves for Melbourne to-morrow to join their mother who has been on an extended visit to Victoria. Games, cards, and musical items interspersed with dancing, were enjoyed. Mrs Guilder, Misses Binning and Clemett and Mrs D. Cunningham contributed songs, and Messrs Long, J. Clemett and McGaughran gave violin solos. * Mrs H. Binning, on behalf of the gathering, presented Miss Clemett with a handsome xylonite set, and in eulogistic terms referred to the popularity of the recipient, and wished her a safe nnd enjoyable trip. On behalf of his daughter, Mr C. Clemett thanked the company for the tribute that had been paid her. KITCHEN EVENING A kitchen evening by Mrs F. Clemett in the Railway Hall on Friday, in honour of Miss Clarice Marshall, whose marriage to Mr J. Hollows, of Dunedin, takes place shortly, was attended by upwards of 150 friends, numerous gifts of every description for kitchen use . being presented. A euchre tournament i was held and dancing was enjoyed. Mrs Hancock won the ladies’ prize in <the euchre tournament and Master Cecil 'Marshall the men's, whilst Mrs York and Mrs Bates carried off the booby ■ prizes. Mrs Havler ably supplied the i music for dancing. [ On the Sunday previous a pleasing i function took place at the Church of ■ England Sunday School, when Miss ‘Marshall’s pupils, ranging in ages from i two to ten years, presented her with a prayer book and a silver serviette ring. The Rex'. P. A. Stanley made the presentation on behalf of the pupils, and wished Miss Marshall every happiness in her new sphere of life. FIRE BOARD At the quarterly meeting of the Fire Board, held on Wednesday, Mr A. W. Gould presiding, the financial position of the Board was disclosed as satisfactory. The recent Joan having allowed of the liquidation of the balance owing on the Dennis plant. The superintendent’s report was adopted, satisfaction being expressed at its contents. It was pointed out by the chairman that owing to complications arising from the new Consolidation Act governing Fire Boards, which comes into force on January 1, his office as chairman must automatically become vacant. In nominating Air Goldfinch for the vacancy, Mr Parton expressed regret at such circumstances arising, and proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Gould for his splendid services to th* Board.
