BUGLE CONTEST
COMPETITION AMONG SCHOOLS SUGGESTION FOR ANNUAL DEMONSTRATION. When the Canterbury Primary ►Schools amateur tathletic meetings were at their height prior to the Avar, one of the features of the meetings was the bugle contest held. In those days Canterbury prided itself on ita bugle I bands, which were trained in conjunction with the old junior cadets. When the junior cadet movement changed |over to the compulsory system now in •existence, the band competitions fell I buck and eventually dropped right out. In conversation with Mr James A. Watson, the musical director of the school bands in Wanganui, a /‘Chronicle” reporter suggested that ‘bugle contests be organised in Wanj ganui and held in conjunction with the ( annual sports demonstration. ‘‘The school bands have not been Jong in existence,” said Mr Watson, i‘‘but no doubt serious consideration i will be given to the suggestion. I i quite believe that the demonstration : would be made more spectacular with I the inclusion of contests. No doubt ,the idea will receive serious consideration from the executive.” • Mr WUtson further stated that he I was more than pleased with the results I attained up to the present. The boys : were very willing and keen, and the standard in Wanganui was quite good. ■ He favoured the idea of the formiation of a schools band or orchestra later, when there were plenty of funds, and asked that the Wanganui public give every support to the schools band movement.
