The Northcliffe case was dismissed. Mr Jowitt anounced that he had advised Miss Owen to agree to judgment for defendants, with costs. Eighteen counsel, of whom nine are K.C.’s, including Sir John Simon, with three specials requiring additional fees to enter court, six firms of solicitors, and a small army of shorthand writers, are all awaiting payment for tho suit. Nine K.C.’s receive 1000 guineas each, and five of them refreshers of 100 guineas c&ch, and the remainder 50 guineas each daily. Ten junior counsel are receiving two-thirds the fees of their leaders. Solicitors ’ charges have not yet been determined, though they will be enormous. Transcripts were sent daily to the printers, and were ready in the evening in booklet form. The number of persons directly engaged in the case not only filled the court, but overflowed tne corridors and passages. Estimates of the costs range from £25,000 to £40,000.
