MODERN HOSPITALS
PROGRESS IN UNITED STATES I DOMINION GRADUATES ABROAD. | A CREDIT TO NEW ZEALAND. j Admiration of American hospitals I was expressed by Dr. L. E. Barnett. i formerly professor of surgery at the I Medical School at Dunedin University, ion his return from an extended tour of | the Continent, Great Britain and the jUnited States. Dr. Barnett said that most of the great American hospials j had the support of w ealthy patrons, I whose contributions enabled these institutions to bring their equipment up-to-date and keep abreast of the most Imodern practice. While in the United States Dr. Barnett spent some time at the famous 'Mayo Clinic at Rochester. He mentioned that he had made three visits '[to the clinic within the past few years, 'and noted that each time this wonderi ful institution had made considerable ‘progress in the matter of research work. ’One feature that impressed the visitor [was the number of New Zealand graduates who wore visiting the clinic and getting first-hand information about the l research work being carried on there. On his recent visit ho saw' Dr Melndie, !a young New Zealander, a graduate of [the Otago Medical School, who was on [the junior staff of the clinic and doing very good work in the research branch. ' During his visit to Great Britain Dr. ‘Barnett met a number of young New’ |Zealand graduates who had gone Home ift.r post-graduate study. He said* he was extremely pleased to find the high ■esteem in which these young mon were [held and this was shown by the appointments manv of them had obtained. It was gratifying to find that the New' 'Zealand graduates were so highly [thought of. “I certainly think we are proceeding on the right lines in New Zealand,” added Dr. Barnett. “There are no [doubt a lot of things to be learned from the older countries, but I don’t think our hospitals are behind those of towns of a similar size abroad. It, has always seemed to me a very wise thing for our young medical men to go abroad every few years and thus keep New Zealand up-to-date. They have been doing that, and it is this fact that helps to explain why our hospitals are so efficient.”
