“WHALE ABOARD!”
CRY ON A STEAMER SUNFISH IMPALED ON RAIL? Whale aboard!’’ was the startling cry when the United State liner Republic emerged front a heavy sea in the Atlantic recently. “At the time,” said Captain Randall, in telling the story at Plymouth, the Republic was GOO miles west, of Queenstown, and a terrilie gale was raging. Tho liner was two days behind time owing to the storm, and she nearly went under on One occasion. It was when a volume of water rushed off her neck as she shook herself free that tho cry of ’Whale aboard!’ was heard.” The visitor was scon impaled on tho port rails, which were twisted and bent like wire ropes. The fish proved to be a sunfish, 81101 b in weight. The fish was drawn in-board with great difficulty, smashing down in its path. '1 he sunfish is a creature of grotesque appearance. It is almost without tail, and the head is merged in the trunk, with a small mouth in front of tho head. It is found in seas of the temperate and tropical zones, and in bright weather is often seen resting or playing on the surface. Tho sunfish varies in length from 3ft. to 7ft.
