STRIKE ECHOES
APPEAL TO GOVERNMENT VICTIMS OF MINING DISPUTE. RELEASE OF STRIKERS SOUGHT. Received December 10, 7.30 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 9. In the House of Commons, following up yesterday’s appeals to Mr Baldwin to release coal strikers, Mr J. H. Thomas begged the Government to do the right thing. Many strikers, ho said, were victims of circumstances. Mr Thomas pleaded with the Government to release the men before Christmas for the sake of their wives and children. Sir D. Hogg, Attorney-General, undertook to convey the appeal for the grant of an amnesty for those in prison to Lord Birkenhead, who was acting Home Secretary while Sir W. Joynson Hicks was ill, but he could not give a promise.
