Dec. 27, 28, 30— Manawatu R.C. Dec. 27, 29, Jan. 1. 3—Auckland R-C. Dec. 31, Jan. 1. 4— Greyroouth J.C. Jan. I—Waikouaiti R-C. Jan. I—Wyndham R.C. Jan. 1, 3—Hawke’? Bay J.C. Jan. 1, 3—Stratford R.C. Jan. 1, 3—Marton J.C. ‘at Feilding). Jan. 1, 3—Wairarapa R.C. NOTES AND CCMMENTS (By “Early Bird.’’) The Waipa meeting is to be held at Te Awamutu to-day. Auckland and Taranaki weights are due to make their appearance on Monday. Wanganui horses entered for the Stratford meeting are Star Area, Diamond Ring, Tamakana. Halgina, Bank Note, Whenuanui. At Te Awamutu to-day the following should run well in their engagements: <’ureaform, Te Koroke. Town Bird. Delightment. Transformer. Paddon and Aussie.

Alloway put up a fine performance when he sprung his surprise at Feilding. and he has gone on the right way aince. On Thursday morning he was worked the reverse way. indicating that he is to race at Ellerslie this •jionth. His next race will protfobly be n the Queen’s Plate on the first day of the Auckland meeting, and there is very possibility of his running well forward in this as well as in his other engagements. Alloway is by Limond from Adyivra. a useful sort of sprinter in her day. but being by the Koatanui horse he should be able to run on over a distance.

One of the best of the over 9.0 division in the Auckland Cup is Te Monanui. who is to be ridden in that event by L. G. Morris. At New Plymouth last Saturday the Potoa gelding was stretched out over a mile and a quarter in company with Hipo and Mint Leaf at parts of the journey, and after the trial it was stated that the connections of the horse were well pleased. Monoghan, of whom nice things are now being written, will probably make his next appearance in the principal handicap events at the Taranaki Summer meeting. Te *Monanui is also engaged here, but that is most likely a courtesy nomination, and anyhow the stable has Hipo and Royal Mint also in. It would occasion no surprise were Monoghan to further extend his inning record at both the Taranaki and Stratford meetings during the holidays. Halgina continues to school well on the Wanganui tracks, and he promises to make his presence felt at the Taranaki an«l Stratford gatherings in the near future. He has had one outing in public over the sticks, this being at Wnverley. where he ran a good fourth after making all the running. One of his opponents on. the Taranaki circuit will be 'Dimakana, but Halgina is a class above him. £nd if he can be persuaded to give of his best there should be no fear of the result.

A couple of smart two-year-olds will je seen out in the juvenile races at New Plymouth, these events being open for three-year-olds also. There are the Eeilding winner, Silvermine, and the dual Waikato victor, Chips. These are two good ones, and if they both go to the post the Taranaki sports will be favoured with a good race. Of the two. however, the former should be the more susceptible to improvement, for the colt had not done much galloping prior to going to Feilding. The trouble that prevented Bisox from fulfilling her engagements at Feilding was hardly got over before she was again in difficulties. She was being exercised on the lead when she broke away, careering up the Hawcra streets and finally falling at an intersection where the asphalt was greasy. This will keep the daughter of defunct Bisogne off the tracks for some time, and it is certlainly bad luck fur her owner that she will have to miss the holiday meetings, for on her last outings—two seconds to Monoghan—she looked a certainty to win good races.

The popular Morris brothers were the chief actors in a little comedy at Woodville, which might easily have developed into a tragedy—for one of them—writes a Bulls correspondent. B. H. Morris had the mount •>n Killocra. a screaming-hot favourite in the Gorge Handicap, and L. G. Morris was on the second fancy. Penman. The latter was in front at the distance, when Killocra (on the outside) tTkrew out a challenge. Penman proved equal to the occasion, and easily drew away from his opponent.

and L.G.M. put his hands down and took things easily, keeping a watchful eye for anything coming on the outer, of course. But brother Bert is full of tricks, ano crossing to the rails, he « rept up on the blind side, and, before L.G.M. knew what was happening caught the latter napping. L.G.M. woke up with a start, and just got there by half-a head, but the look he gave his brother as they pulled up signified stronger than words: “You’re a nice one to try and put a thing like that over a fellow! 1 ’

Present indications point to the Hawera stable presided over by Oney Cox being at the Man&watu meeting at Xmas, for the entries show that the following have been accorded nominations: Enare. Barryander, Euphonium. Ac-red, Helen. Keremoana and Lady Bentinck. It is significant however, that Lady Cavendish is not among this lot. for both she and Rerpmoana arc also in at Auckland. Lady ‘ avendish is galloping very well *at Hawera, and only the other morning showed up favourably in a sprint with Reremoana. The team’s programme will probably be definitely decided upon, so far as Auckland is concerned, next week. Eka. a three-year-old filly by Acre from Park Tide, who made such a favourable impression at Feilding last week, is to make her next appearance at the Taranaki fixture. She was allowed to pay a wonderful price when she won the second day, for she led to the turn the first day. It just shows that racing folk generally are not as observant as they might be when it comes to reading a race.

I A team of four will do the Manai watu fixture in charge of the local , trainer W. H. Dwyer. They are Star ; Area, Great Day. Paleta and Limosa. ' After running at Awapuni the team may go on to Feilding. They are all well, and should pick up a stake or two during the holidays. Paleta, one of the I Leighton breed, will be given a race or two during the holidays and then may j be put aside, as he is growing fast and : it is not proposed to hurry him. Koauau was responsible for a pleas- ' ing effort when he won the hurdles the 1 second day at Feilding. With half a i • mile gone he was standing the leaders a big start, but despite the weight he hud to carry and the heavy going he ! ! beat them home. At the forthcoming ! Manawatu meeting Koauau is down to i race on the flat the first two days and 1 as he is in form should run fairly well. : Much interest was taken in the re- ! appearance of Deluge at Feilding in view of his engagements at the forth- s coming Auckland meeting. The speedy j Absurd gelding contested the open sprint the first day, and although he * was unplaced his owner must have been I pleased with his showing. Badly drawn at the post. Deluge began las well as ■ about five others, and he was with them all along the back, but as he . '•ould not come around the big bend on , the outside of so many he was pulled j in behind, therefore he was fairly well back at the home turn. When asked I for an effort here Deluge responded in a game fashion and was running on at : the finish. Seeing that it was his first race for six months the effort was a : favourable one. The chestnut has been allocated 7.12 in the Railway Handicap ! 'it Ellerslie, a luxury impost for him. ! and if he makes any headway in his , j preparation he must be considered for | : his outings up north. Although it is by no means certain ’ 1 that Mundane will fulfill her engage- ! : meat in the Auckland Cup, she is a : popular fancy with several local early i bettors. There is no doubt that she is in very nicely with 7.8. but it is probably • recognised that she is not a true stayer, i which is the reason that she may be re- ' served for some of tie snorter handi- ; cap events, with H. Wiggins as pilot, i Mundane ran quite a good race in the Mitchelson Cup last month, several ■ good judges considering she was unlucky to lose, and on that showing she I should be capable of running conspicuously in the Summer Cup and A.R.C. Handicap. The daughter of Panmure will not be the worst performer of the Fordell team competing at Ellerslie. Walter Rayner will h&ve a big team to take to Auckland in the near future, for all his horses in active work are entered for the various events on the four-day programme. There are seven: i Deluge, Lysander. The Thorn, Mask, and a trio of two-year-olds Covent Garden (haJf-brother to Mandane) Damaris (half-sister to Lysander), and . Thaw. The youngsters may not be quite forward enough to compete with : the cracks, but track work in the ' mefentime should give some idea of j what they can do. Mask 's special en- , gagement is the Auckland Cup, and i with 8.0 he must be regarded as one of the probables. He is going on the right way. and with the work being put into him he should strip fit and well on the day. He should see out : the journey. Now that Limited has made his first appearance as a three-year-old one has a chance of summing up his prospects ' in the important engagements made for him at Ellerslie, principal of which is the Railway Handicap, in which he has been allocated 7.11, and Wiggins i will be the rider. In the Feilding Stakes the speedy Absurd gelding displayed all his brilliance from the rise of the barrier, despite the fact that he dwelt a bit at the actutal start. The game way he hupg on when Grand Knight got to him was a pleasing feature, and he did not give in. Limited’s [next appearance will be in the Railj way Handicap, and it is expected that fin this event he will be the hardest to beat. A good beginner, he should be able to get a position early, and if he does then he must have ta royal show. It is most probable that Ruanui, and Raukura will accompany Mandane and Limited to Ellerslie, while Tukia and Ikink Note may go to Manawatu. ; Tukia is expected to be the stable re- • presentative in the Palmerston Stakes, ' in which it is possible that she will be iup against good sprinters like Reremoana and Glentruin, and the smart . youngster Roral Ceres, who, however, ; is also engaged at the Auckland meet-

A new development of the case of the colt Kiosk, who has gone in the wind, is promised. It Is the owner’s intention to send this speedy son of Tea Tray and Rosie Desmond to Australia at the end of the present month for the purpose of undergoing an operation on the throfat by a specialist on this portion of the equine anatomy. It is expected that the colt will have to remain on the other side for not more than three w-eeks before being returnd to Wanganui. The effect of the operation will be awaited with Considerable interest by those interested in such eases. Tn the Old Country it is quite a common occurrence for broken-winded hor-es to “curr-d” by the tubing process. i.e., the insertion of la tube in the throat, and the writer has seen several horses who have been so treated win good races in England. In the Southern Hemisphere there is not much tubing done, but if it is such a success as it is at Home the wonder is that there is not more of it gone in for in this country. where the atmosphere is perhaps not so thick las that to be met with on the courses surrounding London or those on the coast, where fogs have been known to envelop the racing grounds to such an extent that the horses wore not seen until they came< to within a ftirlong or less of the finish. The Brighton track, for instance. However, it is to be hoped that the enterprise shown by Kiosk’s owner will meet with own reward. He has a lot of time for Ihe colt, whom he regards las onp of the best, so he has . p very justification for his move in obi taining the best and most skilled sur- ‘ geon to remedy the complaint. With the operation completed successfully. Kiosk will make his reappearance on the race tracks, probably at the b&ck- , end of the present season.

Tn the late winter the three-year-old colt Resinous was sorted out as something above the ordinary, but after he had run prominently on several occasions in maidens and hack sprints without paying a dividend (the punter’s wav of estimating the quality of a horse), many came to the conclusion

that he wfcs overrated. There seemed good grounds for their contention too, in view of the Limond colt’s repeated failures, but after last week the horse’s admirers are much more hopeful. Resinous was tried over eight and a half furlongs on the concluding day at Feilding and hud his rider not been so impetuous he might have won. The colt was asked to go out and win three furlongs from home in the mud, so that w'hen he was challenged in the straight he didn’t have a kick left in him. But his backers showed quite a good profit on the dividend lattaching to second place. Now that he has made a start and has shown ability over a middle distance, there is every probability of Resinous capturing some good riaces at the Taranaki and Stratford meetings within the next few weeks. The hack cup at New Plymouth will suit him. A Wanganui horse that showed some pace at Feilding was Royal Elm. The Elysilan gelding was fancied in the right quarter and they were fortunate in securing the services of a clever lightweight rider, but the horse failed to give any return. He had a lot of ground to make up over the last three furlongs and coming into the straight he wtis on the outside of several horses, finally to finish not so very far behind the placed ones. It was a creditable performance under difficulties and worthy of ta better result. At the holiday meetings he should more than pay his wlay, for he is a useful sort when right.
