CHILDREN’S SPORTS DAY
For the first time in some years Wanganui people to-day will have the opportunity of seeing a combined primary schools ’ sports meeting on a large scale. During a large part of the day many hundreds of children will be engaged in athletic contests at Cook’s Gardens, and at night the principal events will be decided, while there will also be demonstrations of music and marching by the school bands and the brass bands of the city. This portion of the entertainment certainly should give pleasure 1o a very large number of people, for it will illustrate the nature of the “extra” work which is being done so successfully at the schools in and about Wanganui.
The athletic competitions, of course, cannot fail to be full of interest. The representatives of a number of schools will strive for honours for their schools as well as for individual supremacy, and there is surely no finer form of sport than that in which keen, healthy, vigorous boys and girls try their paces. The rivalry of the young people on the sports ground and playing fields is the best kind of rivalry because they all really play the game. The sport is clean and inspiring. The teachers who have got together and organised to-day’s gathering and the members of athletic bodies who are helping them are to be congratulated on their wisdom and energy. It is to be hoped that the result will be the establishment of a permanent sports day for all the schools of the Wanganui district.
