Number one grass was . open for fast work, of which there was I n«»t a great deal done, but what galloping there was was of an interesting nature. Ridden by a light boy, Elysianor was galloped half a mile, and was not pushed to return 51 2-5. the first two taking 24 3-5. The Elysian gelding is to race at Awapuni during the holidays. The Auckland Cup candidate Mask, ridden by a lightweight, went a mile by himself, and gave an impressive display. The first quarter took 26 3-5, after which he got into his stride properly. cutting out the half-mile in 51. the last six furlongs being run in 1.16 1.42 4-5. This was very good going, the lasts ix furlongs being run in 1.16 1-5. The Limond gelding was carrying in the vicinity of seven stone, or a stone less than he has in the big Ellerslie race. Very light boys were also on Lysander and The Thorn when they wore sent out to run six furlongs. Looking big and well and full of life. The Thorn jumped off two and a-half lengths ahead of the colt, but the three-year-old was quickly with him. Crossing the top Lysander held a slight advantage, which he increased in the straight and passed the post a clear two lengths in front of his stable mate. Lysander had the outside running and he was wide out at the finish. They ran the first two furlongs in 24 1-5. three in 35 1-5. half-mile in 48. and the six furlongs in 1.15 3-5. Civility, looking all the better for her trip to Feilding. where she was not started on account of the going, was sent six furlongs in company with Star Area, the latter having a decided pull in the weights, as well as being unshod. The result of their effort was a brilliant gallop. They reeled off the first couple of furlongs in 23 4-5. three furlongs in 35 3-5, half-mile in 47 3-5. and the six in 1.14 1-5. with Civility passing the post well clear of her companion. Diamond Ring, who appears to have made a big improvemfei of late, was associated with Halgina in a bout over six furlongs, and without being pushed she was clear of him at the end in 1.18 4-5. the first half-mile being covered in 50 1 5.

The two-year-old Paleta left three furlone’ behind in 38. He is to race at Awapnni. After breakfast Alloway, the Tv:ldinrr winner, was worked over six furlongs the reverse way. and. striding out nicely under a steady rein all the journev did the first two in 26 4-3. the halfmile in 52 2-5. and the six furlongs in 1.18 4-5. The Timani meeting opens to-day and concludes to-morrow. Precious. Economist, John Bradbury and Gold Brick, winners at Mothven last Saturdav, have been rehandicapped for today’s engagements. The Teschemaker Handicap is the principal event, and in this Battlement BDd Pink Terrace read best, while the open sprint, the Flying Handicap, see Corn Money and Arpent rar-

ing prominently. In the minor events Dubious (Hurdles), Crossbow and Prophet’s Mark (Maiden), Money Peer and All Colours (Spring Stakes), Celeritv 11. (Tycho Hack). John Bradbury (President’s Handicap), and Coch-y-Bondhu (Kerrytown Hack) may be conspicuous. A useful hack in Elysianor failed to repeat his dual success recorded at Feilding earlier in the spring when tried over the same course last week. His prospects were ruined the first day when he was badly drawn, and on the second day he would have to put up a big performance to do better than third to Ladv Anstruther and Resinous carrying the big weight he was allocated in such heavy- going. Elysianor is down to make a reappearance at the Manawatu meeting, in which he will have to meet some pretty smart Tiacks, but with good going he will not disgrace himself.

Although Civility was taken to Feilding for the Cup. she was not a runner ■ on account of the state of the going. • She is quite all right, however, and she will be given her share of racing to do I during the holidays. Civility claims • engagements at both Auckland and ; Manawatu meetings, being entered freely for events at both fixtures, and a decision as her programme will probably be come to after the announcement of the handicaps for the Manawatu gathering. The daughter of Elysian and i Civilisation is very well at the present •ftime, but one would like to have seen her race so as to sharpen her up for big events ahead. Apparently her connections have given up the thought of testing her stamina, for her engagements throughout the holidays are only in events up to ten furlongs. At Ashhurst recently Lady Cynthia ran quite a good race in the Maiden despite being off the course at the home turn. This was repeated at Eeilding i the lirst day. but her next day r s outing caught her just right. Her trainer said the conditions—mud almost up to the knees —would suit heu that he was right was proved in the race. Lady Cynthia ran true all the way and then only went under to Eka in the last few strides in a punishing finish. As Lady Cynthia was paying the ucst part of half a century for a win her few supporters secured a tine price. Lady Cynthia is a five-year-old daughter of Cyntoi and Meroz. and therefore a half sister to a fair performer in Hallowroz. A good few of the Cyntoi breed have been raced about Wanganui, and they have still to prove themselves. Agaric ran two good racea under difficulties at the Eeilding meeting, and therefore it came as rather a surprise to learn that his Waverley owner had disposed of him to Mr Clive McKay, the owner-trainer of Santiago, recently of Bulls but now domiciled at Eeilding. The San Eran gelding has been a splendid stake-earner in his day, but since leaving the stable of W. H. Dwyer he seems to have lost his best form, although recently he showed prospects of a return. During the time Alaric was trained at Wanganui he won £2700 in stakes, which was not bad earnings for a horse the purchase price of which was round about £250. Last week the purchase price at which the chestnut new owner will be at least unlucky if changed hands was said to be £lOO. His he does not win a race or two. At present he seems to have got hold of a bargain, another Santiago, in fact, for which he is said to have paid the same figure. Jockey C. Carmont. who returned from Sydney by the Marama on Tuesday, is carrying his right arm in a sling as a result of a ball he received in Newcastle last Saturday week. It would appear that he was fortunate to escape without more serious injury as the following extract from the Sydney Referee will show: “A field of 20 went to the post in the Northern Stakes and a good race was marred by an accident which might have proved more serious than it did. Two of the runners fell. It was thought that the New Zealander rider, C. Carmont, was seriously injured, for the field, with the exception of the first three or four horses, ran over him, but he escaped with nothing more than a few nasty knocks on various parts of the body. W. Plumb, the other rider, was loss fortunate, for he was removed to the Newcastle Hospital suffering from concuspion and a fractured shoulder blade. ’ 1

The weather was beautifully fine and the plough track fast for work on the Hawera course on Tuesday morning. M. Conway was first out. and gave All Wind place work. Glengariff did a couple of rounds at three-quarter pace. This horse looks well after his Feilding exertions and will be improved by Christmas. Gaillard and Silvermine were exercised on the inside grass track; also Lady Anstruther and Tip U'ree. Benzora and Lethal did a half mile in 49 3-ssec. Paitonu and Midnight Camp ran four furlongs in 51sec. Taikaiwhana. Shut Eye and Gold Rangi finished in that order over four furlong in 504 sec. Skypoint, by himself, ran four furlongs nicely in 50Asec. Bevis got a break on his two companions and ran out five furlongs in 1.4. Subjection and Gold Collector finished together over seven furlongs in 1.36. Lady Cavendish ran half a mile alone in 49lsec. The Lamb Und Blue Peter ran five furlongs, breaking 65sec. Iciogne and War Flame took 53sec to do their four furlongs. Killoch and Seatown ran n good six, finishing together in I.lBsec. Acred and Helen went three furlongs in 37 l-ssec. Barryanda and Euphonium did pace work. Royal Acre and Silent ran four furlongs in 53| sec. Rational was brought in yesterday and is billeted at his old quarters. Erin-go-Bragh, Lady Estelle, Fort Alice and Enare rattled over three furlongs in 37Asec. Nominations for the Marton meeting, to be held at Feilding on January 1 and 3. close at 9 o’clock to-night.
