LABOUR PROBLEMS
FARMERS DISCUSS POSITION SECRET BALLOT ADVOCATED Labour problems wore discussed by the executive of the Wanganui Farmers’ Union yesterday, and the following motion was carried: — “That the Government be asked to amend the Arbitration Act:— (a) That before any union or combination of unions can declare a strike or organised refusal to worK a secret ballot of all workers concerned must be taken under strict supervision. Failure to do this shall make the union or unions concerned subject to a substantial fine. (b) That in the event of an unauthorised strike, organised refusal to accept work by the members of any union or unions, then the preference to unionists clause in their award shall be automatically cancelled. If a secret ballot was conducted the men would not be stampeded into strikes, as they have been in the past,’’ said Mr T. Currie, the president, who was the mover of the resolution. Mr W. Howie, the seconder, said not 20 per cent of the freezing workers had been in favour of the recent strike.
