DISASTROUS FIRE
STARTS IN SHAVINGS PRODUCE WAREHOUSE GUTTED. [Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 8. A fire which originated in some shavings caused severe damage to the property of Staniland, Ltd., salt, spice and coffee merchants, Moorhouse Avenue, yesterday afternoon. The machinery was damaged and salt, grain and other produce was destroyed by fire and water, and the premises were gutted, involving a serious loss, although after a hard fight the brigade succeeded in keeping the flames from spreading to the adjacent properties. The insurances on the stock and machinery total £3lOO and the building is insured for £5OO, both policies being with the Southern Union Office.
