TRAIN HITS JIGGER
SURFACEMAN KILLED COMPANION ESCAPES WITH MINOR INJURIES. (Per Press Association). TIMARU, Dec. 8. A fatal accident occurred on the railway here to-night about a mile from the town, when a goods train travelling north ran into a. railway jigger 'fin which David Maxwell, a railway surfaceman, was returning home from his day’s work, and David Rennett, a freezing works employee, was riding as passenger. The accident happened shortly after live o’clock. It is presumed that it was caused through the railway timetable having been altered this week and Maxwell forgetting that the line was not clear. His view of the train was obscured by a cutting. The driver of the train applied the emergency brakes, but was unable to prevent a collision. Maxwell suffered a compound fracture of the left leg and left arm and concussion, and subsequently died in hospital. Rcnnett suffered a broken elbow and was severely bruised about the head, but it is not expected his injuries will be fata].
