ACCIDENT AT MTT.T, (From the “Chronicle’s’’ Special Correspondent). An accident was sustained by Mr F. Ellery at Gibbs’ mill at Omatani on Tuesday morning. Mr Ellery was working at a saw bench when a splinter on a log that was being sawn was caught by the saw, striking him on the chin ; and jaw. inflicting a wound about four ; inches long. The injured man was brought to Taihape, where he received ' medical attention, six stitches being inserted. Mr Ellery returned to his i home at Omatani in the afternoon. | UTIKU RIFLE CLUB The fortnightly shoot of the Utiku i Defence Rifle Club was held on Satur- ' day afternoon, being the fourth of the ' series for a trophy presented by Mr P. Munro. The conditions were un- . favourable for good shooting, the light i being bad. and a corkscrew wind non- | plussed the marksmen. There were i several absentees from the meeting, 1 due to shearing and other engagements. '
Previous winners were Riflemen j Nicols, R. Anderson and P. Munro. • This will be the last shoot of the • year, but the competition will be re-1 sumed at the end of January. TAIHAPE CRICKET ASSOCIATION A meeting of the Taihape Cricket Association was held on Tuesday evening; present —Messrs Beale (chairman), P. Mair, and Dr. Sinclair (Taihape), Snelling and Chrystall (Moawhango). Smith (Bailway), S. McClure and Dripps (Colts). A letter was received from the Mar- j ton Association, suggesting that a i representative match between the two Associations be played at Taihape on December 18. It was decided that a match )*e 1 played bo played on that day. and arrangements are to be made for tho entertainment of the visitors. The Ruapehu Association wrote, stating that tho chance of a mate*. J with Taihape was remote, owing to the i parlous state of cricket there. It was decided that a one-day mat on be played betwen Town and Country at Taihape on Boxing Day. A two-day match was fixed between Town and Country, the first day on January 1 at Moawhango. and the second day on January 3 at Taihape. It was decided to endevour to arrange a match with Feilding at Feilding on Anniversary Day. Messrs J. E. Hamill and Chrystall and Dr. Sinclair were appointed a selection committee. After considerable discussion it was decided to cancel the games played so far in the second round, and th© draw was made as follows:—Colts v. Tat- ’ hape. December 9 an 16; Railway v., Moawhango. at Taihape. December 14 and 18. Mr T. V. Auld resigned the vicepresidency of the Association, and Mr W. Batley was elected to fill the vacancy. On the first round the position of the clubs is as follows:—Moawhango 5 ' points. Taihape 4. Colts 3. Railway 0.
GENERAL NEWS A partv of seventeen she.arers was brought over from Napeir in three cars to fhe Mangahane station on Tuesday. The road between Napier and Taihape is in good order, with the exception of the ford at the foot of Gentle Annie. A bowling match for the Rangitikei Shield is to be played to-day on the local green between Ohakune and Tarhape, two rinks each'. A meeting of the committee of the Utiku Gymnasium Club was held on Tuesday , evening present—Messrs Heyes (chairman), Hydnes. Tall, Bonck, Wright, J. Wilson (secretary). It was reported that the finances were in a healthy condition, and that all.ncccssary equipment had been ordered. Arrangements had been made for installing a roped ring for the boxers, and when this has been completed an open night is to be held. An invitation is to be extended to the members of tho Taihape Boxing Club, and a series of competitions >il! probably be staged. It was reported that the membership was increasing, and the success of the club is now assured. Airs B. W. Bayley, of Hamilton, is on a visit to Utiku? THE PICTURES William S. Hart was always successful on the screen, but it is doubtful if a more novel and happy selection was ever made than “Tumbleweeds.” his first production for United Artists at the pictures to-night.
