COMING SPORTS EVENTS ELECTRIC LIGHT MEETING . v On Satudday, December 18, under the auspices of the West Coast Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, an electric light sports meeting, unique as to the variety and ambitious nature of its fine programme of events, will be staged at Cook’s Garden’s. Included in a long list of events to be decided are running and cycling races, novelty events, and tis an additional attraction a football clubs’ tug-of-war. For this event the various Wanganui clubs hiave agreed to enter teams, and it is anticipated that several dbuntry clubs will be well represented. The event will extend over the season’s electric light meetings, two pairs of teams. competing each night, and interest is expected to be intensified in this attraction as the season advances.
In view of the approach of Ch Istmas festivities, there will, no doubt, be many who will make an effort to catch the greasy pig. No charge will be made to enter for this novel item and there is no age limit. Entries for all events close with the secretary, Mr J. J. Dillon, next Monday. SCHOOL ATHLETES TO-MOBROW’S SPORTS MEETING With the rapid approach of the termination of the year, Wanganui school children lare beginning to relax from studious concentration and look forward to pleasurable times ahead. As a not inappropriate forerunner of the festive season comes the big school sports, carnival to be held at Cook’s Gardens to-morrow, tind to say that the children—and the public—are eagerly awaiting this special* function is merely mildly expressing the general outlook. To the children it will indeed prove an important event.
There will be a great deal crowded into the day and the evening, tind the night function will be particularly attractive. The Queen Alexandra, Wanganui Garrison and Highland Pipe bands will provide a Wried programme of excellent music. At the night function, too, the racing and skipping finals are to be decided.
In connection with the meeting several valuable trophies will be contested. The Wanganui Education Board banner goes to the school scoring the most points in championship events, while the Cosmopolitan banner goes to the school wdth the highest score in handicap events. Mr W. L. Young, who has already provided a challenge cup for boys, has again come to the fore and given a gold medal for champion girl. At <a meeting of the Primary Schools ’ Athletic Association last evening Mr F. C. Jannings -was appointed marshal for the parade of the bands. Another race—a motor tyre race for boys, post entry—was added to the programme.
