METHODIST ANNIVERSARY
DUBLIN STREET SUNDAY SCHOOL j One of the most popular events of the year is the Dublin Street Mothodist Sunday School anniversary because of the excellent standard of the singing reached by the children. Despite the unpropitious tendencies of the weather on Sunday the church was well tilled morning and evening for this annual event, while in the evening, when more seasonable conditions prevailed, extra I forms placed down the aisles were insufficient to seat the congregation. Although the songs chosen this year were much more difficult than the average, the scholars and teachers, with the aid of the church choir had, under the experienced baton of Mr Spicer, Sunday School superintendent, thoroughly mastered them, and the result left nothing to be desired. Very valuable help was given by an efficient orchestra, and the duties of accompanist, upon whom so much of the success depended, were divided between Miss Huckstep and Miss Knckey. The church had been prettily decorated, and the motto “Lead meta Jesus,” carried out in red roses and yellow daisies, and suspended over the platform, seemed to pulsate w’ith life as the notes of the solo and chorus of the same title, sung by Miss Andrea Lawson and the choir, reverberated through the building. Another favourite hymn was “Twit! Twit! said a little bird.” rendered very sweetly and tunefully by four primary girls, Joyce Phillips, ’Norma Trebie, Zelda Sloss and Laura O’Hara. Gordon Dickson, Maurice Lawson and Albert Lucas sang “Will You Walk With Jesus?” remarkably well. Children’s addresses suitable to the occasion were delivered at each service by the Revs. W. H. E. Abbey, H. G. Goring and D. Hickman. The anniversary celebrations were concluded on Tuesday night with a well-attended social in the schoolroom, Rev. W. H. E. Abbey presiding. The ■ Sunday school secretary, Miss G. j Knuckey, read the report on the year ’s | work, showing that steady progress ! had been maintained in all departments. • The outstanding achievement of the year had been the completion of additional rooms for the Sunday School, which as the result of a monster bazaar held in September were free of debt. After the prizes won by the scholars had been presented by Mrs Hickman, ’supper was handed round by the Sun- | day School teachers, and the sin '-’ng jof the Doxology brought a successful J school year to a fitting conclusion.
