SAILING
The weather was anything but favour<a)ble for the opening of the sailing season yesterday afternoon, the rain cotming down in torrents at intervals. About 2.15 the Commodore {Mr C. E. Mackay) declared the season open with an/approriate speech, and the boats lined-up for the start of a race for Mr j; B; ■Murray's trophy. The Om&pere, Asrawa,. and fionito were scratched for the event. After the first round had been completed all tihe (boats were sailing well together, but after the third round, had finished it 'was easily to be* seen that Clipper 11. had to be reckoned with, and Sandy Hook would nofc': naive the j easy win expected by those watching the j race at that particular stage. On the. home r,un Clipper 11. and Sandy Hook were practically together at the Cattle Wharf, and raced for about 100 yards neck and neck, tout eventually Clipper 11. got way on rand ha<l passed her opponent by about three seconds when tho pistol went for "first place." Sandy Hook had very hiard luck indeed in being beaten by only a matter of seconds, and deserves praise for the way in which she performed. The new boat, The Dottrel, was a decided failure, hut we expect to see her make (more headway in the races •to come. The Eric, Upoola, and -Maureen perfarmed in a manner satisfactory to j ,t!he public, and it is to be hoped that these'boats will-come to the fore 'before tike season clcess. By winning this race 'Clipper ll..'takes Mr J. B. Murray's •barometer, and heads the points for the coveted Studliolm cupiTho three placed 'boats were:—P. C. Price's Clipper 11. 1, Captain Kettle's Sandy Hook 2, Crane Bros.' Maureen 3. One notieable ifeature was the stiarting of Mr D. E. Hutton, who acted as starter in the iajbeen-ce of Mr F. C. Faber, which was a decided success, and ! the mode is to 'be eomimended^to the CEtiiVs official starter.;'' -~ The 'Committee wish to thank all •those who have given money towards the funds of the big Carnival race.
