ST. PAUL'S HAH. MR. ALFRIDD~iL BURTON'S EVENING WITH GREAT AUTHORS. In another column attention is drawn to two evenings with great authors to be given in St. Paul's Hall, Wanganui, on Thursday and Friday next. This will be Mr Burton's first appeaaiance here, but he is well known throughout New Zealand as a very successful entertainer. A southern exchange thus comments :—"■ Mr Burton is essentially a reader, and the extracts chosen from the famous novelist portraying ' The terrible, the pathetic, and the humorous,' were indeed fine. Mr Burton had his audience completely with him from start to finish. The firat division—that of the terrible—was then from 'Oliver Twist,' and for the fearful word pictures the audience were treated to the conversation between Fagin, t-h* crafty Jew fence, and Bill iSykea, the robber, terminating in the murdex'. of Nancy by i Sykes. The graphic description of the ' murder scene, the subsequent <?haunting agony of fear whidh followed in the wake of the murderer, and of Ms ultimate tragic end, 'was particularly fine, and as a reading was a remarkable ef- ■ fcrb. In illustrating the pathetic, ex- i tracts were ohesen from 'Dombey and J Son,' a selection illustrative of Dickens' sympathy with child nature. During this portion of the recital Mr Burton held siis audience spell-bound as he depicted etoenes from the life of poor little Paul Dombey, illustrating the great attraction which tUie old dame, Mrs Pipcbin, exercised over Paul, the numerous. childish questionings when in the company 'of Florence, the visit from die old nurse, and the death of little Paul. Regarding the humorous, a storm of applause greeted the lecturer's choice of Sam Weller, tihe irrepressible Sam figuring in numerous laughable worded pictures. The evening's entertainment, which lasted for two hours, was punc- j tuated with unrestrained outbursts of laughter and rounds of applause." Mr J. H. Keesing is chairman of the local ccansmittee, under whose auspices the lee- N turer is appearing. Tickets may be procured from him and from a number • of local tradespeople. {Rarely indeed does the opportunity of hearing a good elocutionist 'present itself, and we are sure St. Paul's Hall will be crowded on both nights.
