C.J.C. METROPOLITAN MEETING.

ANTICIPATIONS BY "MULTIFORM"

Onco more the principal racing carnival of tHe year in New Zealand has Tolled round, and sportsmen throughout the colony are eagerly speculating sis to the results of the richly-endowed races provided by the C. J.C. The various events on the first day's programma have attracted excellent fields, and both numerically and in point of -quality they are doubtless well up to -the average, so that with fine weather _;fcho contests should be worth going a long way tb see. Every year the powerful Yaldhurst stablo has a mortgage— -or nearly so—upon one or more of the •classic or handicap events, and this year more than usually, the wearers of -the famous Yellow and Black livery

seem to hold the "open sesame!" to tha best of the prizes. The faeb that the Auckland meeting has been postpoi ed through stress of weather should navo the effect of stimulating speculation at the southern fixture, and a record sucoass in every way seems assured. Proceedings open with the Spring Hurdles, in which Wahvera, The Moliican, Romany Girl, and Catherine Gordon read best. The ones I most fancy ar-j WAIWERA or ROMANY GIRL. In the Maiden Plate, Mr. Stead should hold the opposition safe, and ho will probably win with BERESINA. In the Riccarton Welter Ghoorka, Delaware, Pas Seul, and Marguerite seem to mo to be the pick of the Handicap, and the best of these may be DELAWARE or MARGUERITE. The big handicap event of the year seems to bear a very roseate app&aranoo for Mr. Stead, and with Noctuiform sold to go Home, it is probable that ho will get the most possible out of tho colt at the meeting. The fact of his being started in preference to Nightfall and Sungod indicates that ho is a good one, and a stayer, and I cannot pick one to beat him. The next best thing is, perhaps, to select tho ono that will pay the second dividend. Those whose recent performance:) most command them are Paritutu', Veneer, St. Joe, Mystification, and Doucha, and it is from these perhaps that the second dividend will come. Paritutu, by all accounts, has gono off slightly in his work, and at tho last moment I reluctantly discard him. . As between the other four mentioned, perhaps Mystification and Doucho are most consistant, and I will roako mv final selection— NOCTUIFORM , 1 MYSTIFICATION .... 2 DOUCHE ............ 3 Probably, in view of the reported mediocrity of tho Yaldhurst two-year-olds this season, the field for the Welcome Stakes is unusually large, no less than fifteen having accepted. There is a consensus of opinion in favour of Sir Georga Clifford's Clanranald filly Kirrcmuu', and she is certain to go out a strong favourite. She is no doubt a particularly smart one, but I am inclired to. think that "Huascar will be found to carry too many guns for her. I shall therefore rely upon HUASCAR. When tho weights appeared for tho Steward's Handicap I fixed upon Munjeet and Solution as the best handicapped horses in the raoa, and I have since then seen no reason to alter that opinion. Chivalry and Machine Gun are certain to be up amongst them at tho finish, but at the weights I cannot sco anything to beat MUNJEET. Thero is a flood field entered in the Ladies' Purse, which should provide an interesting contest. Royal Crown, Speculate, and Black Diamond appear to mo to ba favourably treated, and tho winner may .turn up in ROYAL CROWN. Matuku, Pas Seul, and Bonnie Brae should provide the winner of the Shorts Handicap, and I shall select PAS SEUL.
