An immense procession of workmen, studente, and school boys, carrying red flags, demonstrated /ait 'Nevski Prospect, singing the " Marsedllaise "and revolutionary songs, and compelling the pclioe to remove their caps and the troops to salute tihe flags. ; ■ The procession stopped at the point where the massacre of Red Sunday took place. The men uncovered and sang ft hymn for the dead with impressive effeot outside the offices of the General Staff. They again sang a dirge outside the university, which was decorated with red flags. / Orators proclaimed the triumph of the
Proletariat section and .the do^falj,^ ojt, the autocracy; demanded the withdrawal of troops from -the capital, the release of all political prisoners, and the retirement of Trepoff. The police and troops did not interfere even when the Emperor was contemptuously advised to abdicate and retire to Londbn, or when the crowd destroyed the Russian flag carried by patriotic demonstrators.
