BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The tisaal. monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last even ing. PRESENT.—His Worship the Mayo/ (Mr. A. G. Bignell), and Crs. P. Bell. G. Caiman, R. W. Green, T. H. Battle, H. Purser, L. Cohen, and E. N. Liffiton. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. Williams. MINUTES.—The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. OPERA HOUSE.—Tho Opera House Committee recommended that Mr. E. H. Buckingham be not given permission to hold, a sacred concert on Sunday.—Adopted. HOUSE.—It was resolved that Mr. Smithies be given the use of his present house pending the arrival of the new gas manager, provided he superintends tha erection of the retorts at the gas works. COOK'S GARDENS—The Reserves Committee reported that they had considered the request of the Caledonian Society and Carnival Committee for a reduction in the charge for Cook's Gardens. They recommended that for a year from date ten per cent, of the gate money be charged. This was not to be taken as a precedent.— Tho recommendations were adopted. NIGHTSOIL—It was resolved that a letter from the*"Purua Road Board re nightsoil removal be referred to the Sanitation Committee REPRESENTATIVE. — Or. Green was appointed as the Council's representative on tho Technical School Committee, vice Cr. Johns, resigned. LORRY.—It was resolved to sell to Winstone Company, Limited, one of the lorries recently ustid by the Council for the conveyance of pipes to Okehu. REPORT.—It was resolved to thank Mr. H. Mason, of Taumaraniu, for his telegram re rise in the river, and it was decided that such reports be handed to the Press.for publication. AUDIT.—The Audtor-General wrote with reference to the comments made on the Borough balance-sheet, and the explanation given by the Town Clerk. He pointed out that while he personally was willing that the balance-sheet should ba made in the form adopted by the Council, it was not m accordance with the provisions of the Municipal | Corpomtions Act, and therefore could riot be allowed.—lt was resolved that the Mayor and Town Clerk deal with tho matter of drawing up a letter to tho Auditor-General. LEGAL.—Messrs. Barnicoat and Tieadwell wrote re water by-laws and nate for removal of house refuse.—The latter was referred to the Sanitation Committee. CONDEMNED BUILDINGS. — Tho Health Department wrote informing the Council that it would have to take steps to demolish a condemned building.— A long discussion took place on tho Council's position in regard to the demolition of condemned buildings. Some Councillors took up the position that the Health Department should carry out the work, others pointed out that the Public Health Act required tho Council to do iha work. It was ultimately decided that notice be given as requested to the Department. WATER CONNECTION.—It was resolved not to accede to tho request re
water connection made by Messrs. Sigley, Whiteford, and Langton. INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL SITE—The Reserves Committee "recommended as follows in connection with the Industrial School Estate Committee's request that the Council carry out ita own requirements prior to taking over the roads on a portion of the estate, and making a special rating area on which to levy a special rate to meet the cost, for which the Trustees in the first place would be responsible to the Council. That Mr. Gilmour b© authorised to make estimates for the following : Cost of formation of the whole width of the roads, including footpaths, concrete ljerbing both sides of streets; gravelling, to include a strip of roadway 16 feet wide, and all footpaths; water and drainage.—The Mayoi said he was very pleased to see that the trustees had decided to open up •this land. The administration of the land had been a blot on the town in the past, but he felt confident that in a short time the land would be in occupation. He was very pleased to j r.otioa that the trustees had adhered to i the original plan of the town of Petre. —Cr. Liffiton said he wished to explain that the trustees had in the past been unable to op_en up the land. There was no demand for the land for building .purposes, and tlie trustees had therefore been obliged to let the land on grazing lease He" doubted whether anybody could have administered the land better, if as well, as the trustees bad done.—The committee's report was adopted. PLUMBING BY-LAWS—A lettei from the Health Department re plumbing by-laws was referred to the Sanitation Committee.' HALF RATES—Mr. Gellatley was granted a rebate of half rates on a building which had been unoccupied for six months. MOTOR CAR.—Mr. J. N. Coleman was granted a motor car license, and a license to drive same.
