Considering that Badkto had his first ride in public only about eight months ago, he has made remarkable progress. The jockey Nicol, who has been riding the crack three-year-old Sysonby in America this season, received in all £1300 for his four winning mounts on that colt. Some American employers must be deaidedly liberal, and in that respect set an example to such much boomed Australian owners, who reckon that when a jockey gets his winning (percentage he is well, if not over, paid. The Near York bookmakers have tired of betting against Mr. J. R. Keene's" champion three-year-old Sysonby, and when that colt started for the rich Century Stakes last month they simply marked him off jtneir boards, and made their books as if he were not in the race, the horse to finish second to him being esteemed the winner. The bookmakers showed good judgment in not •having anything to do with Sysonby, as he won as ne liked, but, all th<s same, their luck was out, as Broomstick, who was most favoured of the remainder, finished second to the champion ,
