OHRISTOHURCH, October 31. At tlhe -Magistrate's Court, to-day, Barney Ryan -was fined £10 for betting in»a public place. Evidence was given to'show that the laocused! "was. calling the odds on tihe Wairnariiibooil-Melbourne Road Race in High Street, but that, although he took money, he refused to pay bets. •: ■ ■" .-'■-. '■>'-.- : Mr V. S. Day, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court t(his morning hearda numiber of informations' laid against bookmakers by the Canterbury Jockey Club and trustees of the'Ghristchufch Racecourse for trespassing on August 15th, 17th, and 19tlh. The following fines were inflicted:—Eric Biradshawy £30 (three charges), E. 'Williams, £20 (two charges), G. Pearce, £15 (two charges), J. McMahon, £5; J. Cuthbertson, £15 (two charges); W. Pollock, £5; S. H. Briea-ley, £15 (two charges); H. Howe, £5; F. Clarke, £10; A. Grover (three c!ba.rges), £5; W. Stellen, £5; S. Barton, £5; J. Laudhlan, £20 (two charges); and W. Langley, £5. Charges against J. Fairbairn, T. Johnson, M. Baimett, and P. Grant were dismissed. Fuirtfher cases of trespassing will Be heard to-morrow morning.
FEILDING, October 31. Jc6eph Thompson and "William Ramsay, on remand on a charge of burglary at Dornigan's, were committed for trial at Palmerston. On_a further charge of breaking and entering tihe premises of Weigjhltman and an attempt to commit a crime, Thompson was committed foe trial and Ramsay was acquitted.
