The owners of the Stoi-m intend to place another steamer on the Wanganui trade shortly. The company will provide a ten days or fortnightly steamer service. . .-'

The two new turbine-driven liners be ' ing constructed for the Cunard Com-, pany are to be an earnest of Great ISritain's determination to . win back tba Atlantic record lost' some years ago to the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse. They will be the largest ships yet built, measuring 800 feet in length, with 88 feet beam and 60 feet in depth; the horse-power of-tSe four turbines aggregates 75,000, and the speed will reach 25 knots soi hoar, 23.5 being the present raord. There' are eight decks, and an .important feature pn the lower deck, devoted largely to "third-class passengers, is the subdivision into separate state rooms. The-great dining saloon measures 80 cfeet by 125 feet, and seats 500 people. From keel to boat deck the ship is 90 feet high, and the first-class state rooms are 50 per. oent._ larger than usual. With such dimensions, the question of stairs becomes a serious one, and for the first time the great size, and increased steadiness of these ships admit of the adoption of passengsr elevators, which will work from the orlop, or lowest deck, to the promenade deck. The motive power consists of four turbines, with an indicated horse-power of 18,000 each. Judging from results giv-en By steam turbines on the cruiser Amethyst, these .fine ships will probably maks an average of 25 miles an hour from port to port under favourable conditions.
