THE A.R.C. AND THE BOOKMAKERS. COMMITTEE'S PROHIBITION CONFIRMED. (Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, October 30. A largely attended meeting of the Auckland Racing Club was held in the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon for the purpose of considering the decision of the Club Committee a few week's ago not to allow bookmakers to ply their calling on the Eller&lie Racecourse. The meeting had been convened in response to a requisition signed by some 50 members of the club, and at the commencement a motion was moved with a view to rescinding the committee's decision and allowing bookmakers to trade on the course as hitherto. Some speeches both for and against the motion were delivered, but arguments really rested with two gentlemen—the Hon. E. Mitchelson (who defended the committee's action) and Mr. W. Hackett (who championed the cause of the bookmakers). The question went to the ballot, and resulted in a majority for the committee's decision, so that the bookmakers will not be permitted to do business at Ellerslie next Saturday. The voting was 99 for the exclusion of bookmakers and 78 against, leaving & majority of 21 for the committee's action.
