Entries for the opening race of the season of the Wanganui Sailing Club, to be sailed on the 9th of November, c-.ose with the secretary this (Tuesday) evening.
The recent self-denial season conducted by the Salvation Army in Wellington yielded within a few pounds of £700, which exceeds last year's record collection (£630), and it is hoped to bring the total up to the £700. The Newtown division raised £121, which was £31 better than last year's collection.
Noumeah news received in Sydney states that a French warship from the New Hebrides reports that with the warship Pegasus she landed a force at Bushman's Bay, and surprised the village of Nevaar. Five natives were killed and several wounded, while fifty wero captured. The villagers bad frequently attacked the whites, and had challenged the warships to attack them.
In the Police Court, Blenheim, a vtterinary surgeon admitted the chargo of being on licensed premises, but pleaded that he merely visited the .stables of the hotel in performance of his professional work. Ihe police statc:l that they would not have taken action ii' defendant bad notified his purpose prior to visiting the hotel. Ths case was dismissed.
"With a view to the opening of the IJangitatau Block of about 11,000 acres, s tuated about nine miles inland on the Waitotara River, and which was surveyed about three and a half years ago, a pai-ty consisting of Messrs. Strauchon (Commissioner of Crown Lands), Lundius (of the Wanganui office), Fisher (N.R. Trustee), and "Wheeler (surveyor), visited the localis- v on the 17th.
A printer's error occurred in our yesterday's issae in a paragraph referring to Mr. Bassett's Mosstown address. Speaking on the land question, he was made to say "it was doubtful if after paying cost of administration the rent collected—four per cent., less two per cent, allowance made to farmers who pay: promptly—-would cover the cost of interest and exchange on same." It should have read "ten" per cent.

The annual meeting of the Wanganui Camera Club was held in the- club's room on Friday evening. Mr. C. W. Babbage was in the chair. After the adoption of the report and balancesheet, the following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Patron, Mr. S. S. Griffiths; president, Mr. C. W. Babbage; vice-president, Dr. Christie: secretary, Mr. G. R. Boulton; committee' Messrs. Beswick, Efenton, Downes, Meldrum, and Morrison. Several uaw. members were elected, and a lot of other business transacted in anticipation of tho club's exhibition at carnival time., .
The Wellington Dentists' Association has a scheme on hand for the examination of the teeth of about three thousand school children, the intention being to supply the parents with duplicate sheets, showing the results of the examinations. In furtherance of this scheme, the association applied to the Board for the necessary permission. Mr. McDonald and Mr. Vile both objected strongly to granting anything in the shape cf a monopoly to "unions" of any kind. ' It was decided by four votes to two to grant tho desired permission. It will not take more than two hours for each school.
- The Wanganui Flying Club's Te Aroha race resulted as follows:—Mr ; J. Buckingham's Day Star Ist, Mr H. Harinington's Dundas 2nd, Mr E. Part's Dick Turpin 3rd. The air-line was' 184 miles, and the time—iFicst, 4 hours -21 minutes 5 second, 4 houra 20 minutes 28 seconds; third, 4 hours 10 minutes 14 seconds. The Olub have to thank Mr Wallace for his kindness in looking after the birds and liberating same. A special general meeting will be held at Mr Wild's (hairdresser) this evening to consider whether the Olub will enter their birds for the Wanganui Show raceor not, when all members are requested to attend.
As an illustration of the need of medical expert knowledge in legislation, Dr. Chappie, of Wellington, at a nveeting last week, mentioned the case of r, young man who had coftae under tfro baneful influence of the pernicious and indecent literature that pours into th« colony. . This literature, which aims at misleading young men into the belief that physiological conditions are symptoms or disease, insanity," and prematuro decay; had so confirmed ' him in this notion that after1 -about two years of correspondence with these charlatans, and taking their boasted remedies, he shot himself in despair. Tho mental distress and robbery involved in this exploitation of New Zealand youths is, in Dr. Chappie's opinion, appalling in its extent, and demands legislative interference.
What promises to be.a most enjoyable concert will be held in the Church of Christ this evening, commencing at 8 c:c'ock. Tho choir have been practising assidaojsly for some time, and they have prepared a fine programme, in which they w'll bo assisted by a number of leading amateurs. Four glees will bo rendered, viz., "Anchored," "Let the Hills Resound with Song," "The Wedding Morn," and "The Laughing Chorus." Two quartettes— "Damo Durden" and "The Sobbing Chorus"—will be sung, and Miss Clapham and Messrs. Staffan and Armstrong will render three instrumental trios. Mr. George Buckley will play a cornet solo, and Mr. De La Heye will sing two solos. Other songs and duets will be rendered by the choir. The concert will commence at 8 o'clock, and we hope to see a large attendance.
We are pleased to see Mr W. S. Dusfcin home again looking very hearty after his trip to tiho Old Country.
Those wiho (intend to patronise West's Pictures and the Briscians on Friday and Saturday evening's would do well to reserve their seats.

The annual meeting of the Wanganui branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society will be held in St. Paul's Hall to-morrow evening.
The Rev. A. Morton has just received from the New Hebrides 2401b5. of arrowroot, to be sold for tfhe purpose of raising funds for the erection of a chuirefti at tihe islands. The arrowroot, which cannot be excelled, may be obtained from Mr Morton or Mr Bruce.
The comniittee of the Marton Athletic Club have, we understand, decided to abandon tlhe November sports meeting owing to the Halcombe and Foxton meetings taking place on the same date. It ds intended, [however, to put on a good programme for the meeting to be held on 'March 17th, when the "bill of fare" will include the Marton Wheel Race for 20 sovereigns and other cycling, pedestrian, and horse-jumping events, endowed with prizes in like proportion. .
