Mr. William Gray, Chief Inspector of Schools at Wanganui, has been appointed Principal of the Wellington Training College for Teachers. While congratulating Mr. Gray upon his important appointment, we regret that Wanganui wi&lose the services or one who has done so much for the cause ot education. ■ , , _ There died on Thursday at Oamaru, at the great age of 95, William McHutcheson, who was born in Scotland in 1810. He entered the Scotch Inland Revenue Department early in life, and continued therein till 1862, when he came to New Zealand and settled in Christchurch. Twenty years ago he removed to Oamaru, where he lived t:li the time of his death. He leaves a large family, 26 grandchildren, and 5 exeat grandchildren. His son and namesake is Chief Postmaster at Timaru. News has been received in Oamaru by cable from Vancouver, British Columbia, of the death there, suddenly, of Mr. Thomas Meek, president of the Flourmillers' Association, and head ot the firm of J. and T. Meek, «our millers. Deceased was born in 184 Yin Lanarkshire, Scotland, and arrived m Dunedin by the ship Electric in 18M. He settled in Oamaru the same year, and had-resided there ever svnoa. Ihe first mill owned by the firm was established in 1867. It was a wooden building. In 1872 the firm purchased the and^oonverted them into roller inill#in 18&6. The h«" ■• # second mill, acquired in 1881 Mr Meek was for many years a member ot the Borough Council and Harbour Board, and was greatly respected m :Sie>district, arid, indeed, throughout the colony. He 'leaves a widow, three sons, and three daughters. The news of his death has given a shock to the Oamaru community.
