SERIOUS ACCIDENT AT UTIKU.

A serious accident occurred at B. L. Knight's sawmill, near Utiku, about l'l o'clock on Monday morning, whereby a man named William Heapy, single, aged 32 years, lost his right leg below the- knee. Heapy bad just that morning commenced duty as a signalman in connection with a log hauling engine. When hauling one log, the strap on the rope broke, and, striking Heapy, who was standing within range, almost cut his leg off. The cut was a clean one, only a fragment of flesh uniting the portions. The engine was at once stoppod and the engine-driver (T. McLachlan) showed great presence of mind in placing a ligature on the leg, and, by preventing the bleeding, saving the man s life. The sufferer was then carried four miles through the bush by his mates, and on being met by Dr. Rogers, of Taihape, Heapy was attended to and sent by train to the Wanganui Hospital, one of his mates accompanying him. Though suffering excruciating pain, Heapy showed wonderful endurance, and did not utter a whimper. On arrival at the Hospital at night, the sufferer was surgically treated, and is now doing as wsll as can be expected.

Mr. Dalrymple, Inspector of Machinery, left yesterday to view the scene of tho accident.
