THE BIRTH RATE.

United Press Association—Copyright

Received October 20, 9.55 p.m

LONDON, October 20

Bishop Ingram, addressing the clergy in St. Paul's Cathedral, declared that it was impossible to describe the dismay wherewith he viewed the diminution of the birthrate in England amd Australia through deliberate artificial prevention. It was necessary to summon the forces of the Church to stem "the gigantic evil. He honoured the Roman Church for condemning prevention as a sin. It would, he said, ill become the Church of England to less clearly condemn the practice which was eating but the heart and draining the life-blood of the country in all parts. The miserable gospel of comfort was the curse of the present day. We must live the simpler and harder life »of our forefathers or the glorious heritage pf the Empire will surely slip froim our nerveless fingers.
