YOUNG MEN'S NO-LICENSE CLUB.
A NEW AND POWERFUL MOVE-
MENT
A general meeting of the Wanganui "Young Men's No-License/Club was held in Jackson's Rooms last eyyening, -Mr/.?; \V. Grey presiding over a large,, . r and _ % representative attendance.' TKis is'tlW first meeting of the club which has come under'public notice, and some, iii- ' formation as'to the constitution and object of tho club -will doubtless prove of interest to our readers. The club, as was evidenced last evening, is thoroughly cosmopolitan in its character, and the membership--which has already reached 250—embraces young men of nli shades of political opinion, all united under the presidency of Mr. H. F. Christie. The object for which the club has been formed is simply but forcibly stilted on tho membership card—"To induce young men to promote their own interests by assisting the No-liconso movement, by personal influence, the distribution of suitable literature, social intercourse, etc." The only pledge which the members are required to take in couched in the following words:— "As I intend to vote for No-lioense at the coming election, please enter my name as a member of the club. I will use my best endeavours to promote the object of tho club." This, it will be seen, is entirely non-political, and enables the enlistment of both moderate1 drinkers'.and -total abstainers, so long only as they are prepared to vote for tho closing of the licensed liquor bars. It is expected that the membership' will represent a solid block vote for No-license of between 500 or 600 mem-' bers. At last night's meeting a gco-:A deal.of routine business, pertaining to the work of organisation in connection with'tho approaching local option pold, and in relation to the general business of the club, was transacted. During the evening the Chairman delive red, a splendid address, the report of which we are reluctantly compelled to hold over till to-morrow morning.
After further business of a general nature had been transacted, and matters concerning the best means of forvarding -the object of the club, had been considered, the meeting adjourned at 10 o'clock.
