THE VANCOUVER MAIL SERVICE.

United Press Association—Copyright

Received October 19, 9.2 a.m

MELBOURNE, October 19. Mr Chapman said that the Commonwealth subsidy would be £26,626. He quoted figures of imports from Canada showing that had decreased from £353,----000 in 1803 to £222,000 in 1904, while the exports to Canada decreased from £63,000 in 1900 to £29,350 in 1904. The mail matter carried from Australia by tihe Vancouver line in 1904 was 38,0001b, and two-fifths of it went to the United States, while 80,0001b was carried by1 tihe 'Frisco line.

•Mr Sydney Smith, late Postmaster Gen-fral, explained that when the trouble' with the Orient Company occurred it was though passible to arrange for a great improvement in "'the Vancouver service so as to take the place of the Orient service. The Union Company, however, wanted £230,000 for two years, and required two years to make provision for new steamers. This was impracticable. Then,- when the question of renewing the existing contract was diiscupsed, they asked an increased subsidy of £20,000 ; eventually agreeing to accept an 'additional £6000. If that had mot been granted the service would have had to be abandoned.
