WANGANUI CHRISTMAS CARNIVAL.
The usual committee meeting was hold at the Council Chambers last evening. Present: Colonel Watt (iv tho chair), R. Yarrow, P. Lewis, 11. McNiven, C. Powell, T. Copeland, T. H. Battle, J. G. Swan, J. F. Holloway, H. Rice, D. J. Esau, C. J. McCarthy, D- Dustin, E. G. Grove, G. Bullock, R. H. White, J. Palmer, and W. R. Tuck.
The minutes of the last meeting wer*J read and confirmed.
APOLOGIES.—Apologies were received from Messrs. Caiman, Bignell, Williams, Young, Price, and others. Finance was discussed, and the general opinion was that given fine weather the outlook was most promising.
FLORAL FETE.—Mr. White re ported that the Wanganui Museum Trustees were willing to co-operate in limning the floral fete, and that by the next meeting of the committee full details would be available.
SHOOTING.—Captain Swan brought up the question of the proposed shooting meeting, and asked in the event of the gathering taking place would the Carnival Committee be willing to donate a championship Belt, which would cost between £7 and £10. After discussion, Captain Swan proposed that the sum of £10 be voted. This was seconded by Mr. Palmer and carried. Mr. Yarrow announced that h3 would contribute £2 towards it.
ADVERTISING. — Mr. Mathison, manager of the Westport Coal Company, offered to display advertising • matter in Palmerston North, and his offer was accepted with thanks. The secretary and the canvassers ware empowered to -arrange for collecting amounts promised. BANDS.—The question of engaging a band or bands for the various functions was discussed. Mr. Price proposed, and Mr. Yarrow seconded, the local bands be asked conditions under which they would play. The understanding was that the Garrison Band, as the senior band, would be engaged on the ratio of two to one.
SOUVENIR FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN Mr. Holloway brought up the question of presenting the school children who attended the Technical Exhibition ,with some souvenir of the occasion. Nothing definite came of the discussion.
ACCOMMODATION.—The secretary was instructed to open a register for the convenience of visitors, and the cooperation of hotel proprietors, boardinghouse keepers, etc., is invited. OIL LAUNCH RACES.—The secretary was instructed to write to a number of boat builders in the Auckland district, and see if any competition will ba forthcoming. The meeting adjourned with a vote of thanks to Colonel Watt, until Wednesday, the 25th October. The Band Contest Committee met subsequently. Colonel Watt was reelected chairman. The same programme as last year was adopted, viz., Marching—First £30, second £15, third £5. Waltz Contest—First £15, second £7 10s., third £2 10s. With sets of silver medals for aggregate musical points, and a gold medal for the conductor, also a gold medal' for the drum-major of the band winning the Marching Contest. It was also agreed to entertain all visiting bandsmen at lunch before the contest. With such liberal prizes for one day'a contesting, the entries-should be numCJ OUS.
