FOOTBALL.
THE CAUSE OF THE TROUBLE
(Per Press Association)^ WELLINGTON, Octooei- 18. The message to the New Zealand footballers, which was sent by the Premier, was in reply to the following cablegram, sent on the 12th cf October, ]>y the editor of the "Daily Mail," London: "Seddon, Premier, New Zealand.—British pubHo amazed at the brilliancy of the New Zealand footballers. Could you kindly let ns know what New Zealand thinks of their remarkable success. Sincere thanks.— (Signed) Editor, 'Daily Mail.' " The Premier's reply was as. follows! "Editor, 'Daily Mail,' London.—Nob surprised that British public are amazed at bniliancy of New Zealand footballers. The British team visiting the colonies in 1904 were beaten by New Zealand, and in two other matches gavo an index of the standard of Rugby footbail in England, and this augured success for our pioneer team's visit to the Mother Country. It is confidently anticipated that the present team will prove equal to the strongest teams in England, demonstrating the advancement of scientific Rugby football in this colony. As indicating public interest here, information respecting the contests taking place in Great Britain is awaited almost as eagerly aa news of the late war in South Africa, and the results are received with greats enthusiasm. The natural and healthy conditions of colonial life produce stalwart and athletic sons, of whom New Zealand and the Empire are justly proud.—(iSgned) Seddon."
